One of my friends just called asking if a magnet will pick up his tungsten steel wedding ring. He dropped it off a dock he was building and can't find it. He also mentioned that it was "triton", but I'm not sure what that refers to.

Yep. He's already been swimming. At least it's warm out.

I know some folks on TWW have tungsten rings though. Someone grab a magnet and find out. Google didn't help me.

no tungsten is not magnetic, a simple google search would have shown you this, but you decided to be a whore and make a thread about it on here.

my guess would be that it is non-ferrous just based on its location on the table

It's probably not a smooth area and got a lot of debris, but if I cared about it enough I'd go and buy a sifter and search for a day rather than hear the wifey bitch for weeks.

if it wasn't engraved or anything, go buy a new one...odds are against it being a custom job because tungsten's way too hard

what will suck is that as soon as he touched the bottom, well there goes the visibility

if he has a good idea where it fell, search for indentations in the silt and try not to disturb the bottom too much

thats how we had to find things in scuba class

"steel"

it just has tungsten in it... ((alloy) it should be magnetic))

Quote :
"The most common magnetic metals are iron, nickel, and cobalt. Alloys (mixtures) that contain one or more of those elements are usually magnetic (i.e. will stick to magnets)."

steel is iron and carbon, tungsten steel has tungsten alloyed with it as well.

If your magnet is strong enough, it will pick up anything.

If the ring hasn't been covered up by leaves or whatever on the bottom, maybe you could get a waterproof flashlight and shine it around? You might see a sparkle or reflection or something.

if this were a nintendo game, i'd suggest your friend talk to someone in the village to get the rod, beat the bad guy guarding the mountains for the hook, and then fishing for the guppy who has the ring

but not all things are this easy
