1. HIV (rev wright)
2. Crack (rev wright)
3. Gangsta rap (Alicia Keys)

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,350916,00.html

Quote :
"Keys, 27, said she's read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead," according to an interview in the magazine's May issue, on newsstands Tuesday.

Another of her theories: The bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing."

So I'm confused. Gangsta rap is a CIA ploy to promote black-on-black violence, and then:

Quote :
""Keys, 27, said she's read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead,""

So, does this mean Keyes is a CIA plant?

Quote :
" In my experience as a trained nurse while attending persons afflicted with various and often revolting diseases, no matter what their ailments, I have never found any one so repulsive as the chronic masturbator. It would be difficult not to fill page upon page of heartrending confessions made by young girls, whose lives were blighted by this pernicious habit, always begun so innocently, for even after they have ceased the habit, they find themselves incapable of any relief in the natural act. [...] Perhaps the greatest physical danger to the chronic masturbator is the inability to perform the sexual act naturally.[11]

For her, masturbation was not just a physical act, it was a mental state:

In the boy or girl past puberty, we find one of the most dangerous forms of masturbation, i.e., mental masturbation, which consists of forming mental pictures, or thinking obscene or voluptuous pictures. This form is considered especially harmful to the brain, for the habit becomes so fixed that it is almost impossible to free the thoughts from lustful pictures.[12]

The idea that the government created HIV does sound ridiculous, but given the government's history with black people, it's not surprising some people have this opinion. When you look at cases like these:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/nationworld/story/334564.html

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0DEEDB163CF936A25757C0A96E958260

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,878602,00.html

http://hnn.us/roundup/entries/38691.html

where, as recently as ten years ago, the government had no problem conducting questionable experiments on poor people of color.

"Nine low-income families in Baltimore row houses agreed to let researchers till the sewage sludge into their yards and plant new grass."

Kinda let that one get past you shin. Seems like they had a say. Kinda like bitching the govt is testing some drug on you when you sign up for the trial for some cash.

Im really disapointed in Keys. Hopefully when the full article comes out it will be a different story. I hope.

Lets assume she is right and the govt did create gangsta rap. What is she saying about blacks then?

^^^ I'd bet that those researchers banked on the people being to uneducated to realize what they were doing, or perhaps just gave them some money to make them jump on the deal.
edit:
Quote :
"Families were assured the sludge was safe and were never told about any harmful ingredients...In exchange, they were given food coupons as well as the free lawns"

Just because someone "agreed" doesn't mean they aren't being exploited. Old people and poor people are easy to trick in to dong lots of things.

And eyedrb what, theoretically, would it say about black people, in your mind if the gov created gangsta rap?

edit: not that the article couldn't be grossly distorting the study as is often done

"Rufus Chaney, an Agriculture Department research agronomist who co-wrote the Baltimore study, said the researchers provided the families with brochures about lead hazards, tested the soil in their yards and gave assurances that the Orgro fertilizer was store-bought and perfectly safe.

“They were told that their lawn, as it stood, before it was treated, was a lead danger to their children,” said Chaney. “So that even if they ate some of the soil, there would not be as much of a risk as there was before. And that’s what the science shows.”

WHAT THE FAMILIES WERE TOLD

Chaney said the Baltimore neighborhoods were chosen because they were within an economically depressed area qualifying for tax incentives. He acknowledged the families were not told there have been some safety disputes and health complaints over sludge."

Quote :

I bet you are right. I also bet they figured out that Donald Trump wasnt going to let them dump shit on his lawn for some food stamps.

I also dont think its the govt job to bail out people who are too uneducated to realize what they are doing. Im sure you strongly disagree with that Moron.

Whether or not they had a choice isn't the point. The government or other entities either (1) didn't properly inform them of the risks or (2) relied on their lack of education to assess the situation.

Quote :
"I also dont think its the govt job to bail out people who are too uneducated to realize what they are doing. "

I don't think it's the job of the government to exploit people too uneducated to realize what they are doing.

And who makes that determination? If someone signs up for something and gets compensated for an experiment.. that is THIER choice. What is the problem? Do you have issues with the NIH?

The problem is they weren't properly informed of the risks. That's blatantly clear in the article. And if someone is conducting a study, they have an obligation to make sure that the people involved understand those risks and it's flat-out unethical to do otherwise.

Before you do any study, esp medical you have to sign paperwork. If you neglect to read what you are putting your name to that is YOUR fault. The same with buying houses. You are signing that YOU accept the terms and consider yourself informed.

"properly informed" has been used SO much lately as just another excuse for people making bad decisions.

You didnt answer my question on the NIH. Do you have an ethical issue with that?

While I agree with you for the most part eyedrb re: the responsibility of those signing a consent form to say, actually read the form, the specific case ShinAntonio cites seems to be one where the information was never there to begin with.

To wit:
Quote :
"He acknowledged the families were not told there have been some safety disputes and health complaints over sludge."

It sounds like they explicitly relevant withheld information. Which is a serious ethical lapse.

"Meanwhile, there has been a paucity of research into the possible harmful effects of heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, other chemicals and disease-causing micro-organisms often found in sludge.

A series of reports by the EPA’s inspector general and the National Academy of Sciences between 1996 and 2002 faulted the adequacy of the science behind the EPA’s 1993 regulations on sludge.

The chairman of the 2002 academy panel, Thomas Burke, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, says epidemiological studies have never been done to show whether spreading sludge on land is safe.

“There are potential pathogens and chemicals that are not in the realm of safe,” Burke told the AP. “What’s needed are more studies on what’s going on with the pathogens in sludge – are we actually removing them? The commitment to connecting the dots hasn’t been there.”

That’s not what the subjects of the Baltimore and East St. Louis research were told."

Quote :
"He acknowledged the families were not told there have been some safety disputes and health complaints over sludge."

Quote :
"“They were told that it was composted biosolids that are available for sale commercially in the state of Maryland. I don’t think there’s any other further disclosure required,” Chaney said."

Quote :
"It called the fertilizer “a simple low-cost” technology for parents and communities “to reduce risk to their children” who are in danger of lead contamination. The results were published in Science of the Total Environment, an international research journal, in 2005."

Quote :
"But when eaten, “it’s not at all clear that the sludge binding the lead will be preserved in the acidity of the stomach,” he said. “Actually thinking about a child ingesting this, there’s a very good chance that it’s not safe.”

McBride and others also questioned the choice of neighborhoods for the studies and why residents were not told about other, possibly harmful ingredients in sludge.

“If you’re not telling them what kinds of chemicals could be in there, how could they even make an informed decision? If you’re telling them it’s absolutely safe, then it’s not ethical,” McBride said. “In many relatively wealthy people’s neighborhoods, I would think that people would research this a little and see a problem and raise a red flag.”"

Quote :
"Baltimore environmental activist Glenn Ross says choosing poor neighborhoods destined for demolition makes it hard to track a study’s participants.

“If you wanted to do something very questionable, you would do it in a neighborhood that’s not going to be there in a few years,” he said."

You are such an idiot, and have no basis or even relevance as to make that claim.

Drsteve, I saw that mentioned. However, safety disputes and complaints may or may not be relative. For instance, if you are taking a experimental drug and a couple people complain it gives them a rash, do they have to stop the trail and tell everyone it gives them a rash? If you believe they do, then you have ruined the trial, esp if it is a blind experiment. My point is that without knowing what the complaints were, its hard to determine what the severity would be or the outcome. For instance what if they were complaining of the smell? We just dont know. However, its far easier to assume the worse. Is it unethical to continue to give medicine or, in this case, yard treatments if its known to cause more problems than benefits? YES. However, Im not sure that was established in this case, or else they wouldnt be doing the trial.

Shin, NIH is national institute for health. Where every day people are put into groups, some receive meds, others receive sugar pills. Do you have an issue with that?

Shin, I know what your issue is. But im asking you to take it further. Im looking at this as people who are given a choice and make one. YOu seem to think they dont have a choice or arent smart enough to make one. But it isnt a stretch to compare this to what the NIH does daily to improve medicine. It seems this company was looking for ways to lower lead exposure to children. Well it seems this didnt work.
