Anyways, some circumstances have changed since I registered for housing. I believe I will be getting an apartment with two of my buddies for the fall. I'm a young'n and, subsequently, this is my first apartment. If anyone has any recommendations or comments for various 3br/3ba establishments, I would appreciate it. Provide as much or as little detail as you like. Thanks.

I used to live in Centennial Village 3 bedroom, I think now they're at $390/mo per person - utilities included but not cable TV

It's on the Wolfline, right across the street from Food Lion, nice big rooms & kitchen. Each room has a walk in closet and bathroom. It's a pretty quiet place, there's college kids but I never got woken up by a party. They might be full this time of year but it's worth checking.

Now I live in U Commons, it's way cheaper $340/mo with utilities and cable included. But it's a 4 bedroom, small rooms, TINY kitchen, and not nearly as nice. Also on the Wolfline. That's important for me, I save $300 on a parking pass and the convenience of the Wolfline is great.

watch out for rental companies with bad reputations. stay away from preiss company. i hear barker realty is bad too.
it is really helpful to get an apartment that has all your bills included. that will be a big issue with your first roommates, especially if you use significantly less power than them and have to split evenly (but if your parents are paying the bills you might not mind). i had a bad experience because i was forced to open the cable/internet & electric accounts in my name and ended up with returned checks when my roommates didn't pay their share on time.
also be prepared to pay an enormous amount to university housing for canceling- i think it's somewhere between $200 and 1/2 semester depending on when you actually cancel.

^ agreed. Preiss is evil and Barker is just incompetent. Used to live in a rental house run by Barker and our refrigerator broke. It took them more than a week to fix it! More than a week with no fridge, fuck that.

Also on the ground floor of U Commons you may have bugs. We had a pretty bad roach problem when I moved in. But I cleaned up the gross kitchen and put roach powder everywhere and haven't seen one since. If you keep the kitchen clean you will not have a problem

All these people bitching about Preiss Company are retards. I lived at University Woods for two years and never had a major problem with them, nor did anyone of the people I lived with. Any time something did go wrong, they were pretty quick to fix it and awfully nice about it. No they weren't luxury condos, yes, it was sometimes loud on the weekends. But I paid < $300/month; you get what you pay for.

Walnut Creek: 1 year, $297, 500 stars
University Woods: 2 years, $265/$295, four stars

Campus Edge (it used to be Ivy Chase)

I live in a 2 bedroom and we pay $535 each for all utilities + cable tv/internet included. They're also putting in 2 new pools, a new weight room, basketball courts, and redesigning the clubhouse to have a huge deck.

The only downside to this place is towing, but I imagine it's like that everywhere. If you park here without a permit after 6pm then you will be towed.They're outside at this very moment tearing down a couple of the private garage buildings to make room for new parking spaces so maybe the visitor parking spots will increase.

It's all college kids, so it can be noisy sometimes, but at least you don't have to worry about the cops being called anytime you turn your stereo on. No bugs, but I live on the 3rd floor so I'm not sure about the bottom floor. If the search feature ever works again you'll see some people dislike this place just to dislike it, but I'd be willing to bet that most people dislike it because they can't afford to live here.

I'm in Dominion Walnut Ridge (which has a new name that I don't know yet).

I like it so far and it's really quiet. I have yet to have trouble finding parking directly in front of my apartment and I haven't seen any tow trucks. We needed some of our light fixtures fixed and they came and fixed it the day after we complained, which was pretty awesome. I also can't hear my roomie when she's in her room with her boyfriend, which is a perk

$722 for 2 bedroom, 24 hour gym, laundry room and pool.

I'm in Walnut Ridge too. We pay 1099 for a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath. The bedrooms are big. I have the master and it's - 18x12. The maintenence can be a little incompetent and beware of needing to spray for ants and/or wood roaches (although the office got the exterminators out here pronto when we and our downstairs neighbor had a bad ant problem). My boyfriend and my roomates boyfriend are moving in to a two bedroom here in a month.

I used to live at Dominion Walnut Ridge (I guess woodland court now)... I never had much of a problem there. The SWAT team did raid an apartment below me once, but that was just fun to watch, and not a regular thing. The apartments are somewhat old, and the utilities might be high, but just watch your AC in the summer and you should be golden.

The apartments have a lot of room in them, and there are two pools that are generally not packed.

lake park, -1 stars, $250/rm no utilities included. (barker sucks my ass. didn't fix blinds when we moved in and tried to charge us when we moved out. lost our rent checks multiple times and charged a late fee. loud ass apartments with assholes revving motorcycles at 3am, knocking over drink machines, party place in a bad way. would not recommend)

wolf creek, 2 stars, $395/rm all inclusive but "cable" they provided was satellite and went out in the rain. (nice pool, shitty maintenance and incompetent staff, parking nazis, party spot in a good way.)

marcom st. ghetto townhouses, 3.5 stars, $750 for a 3bd/2ba, two-level tounhouse with no utilities included. (the place wasn't that great, and the neighborhood around was sketch, but it was a heck of a deal and the management was surprisingly competent. if you can deal with a mariachi band on sunday mornings from the trailer park next door, i say go for it. not really a party place, was quite. like i said, ghetto, but perfect for broke college kids)

Gorman crossing is sort of hit or miss, just depends on which unit you get.

My favorite apt. near campus was probably Champion Court condiminiums. 3 br, 2.5 bath, $700. It was privately owned so we got a great deal on it. Close to campus, on the wolfline, right across from Mission Valley. Location was great.

Catzor, I live in that floor plan. Plenty of space, that's for sure. I have the master and love the space and walk in closet. I do have to mention that rates are going to go up (probably for current and new residents), and they are renovating some of the apts which will make them even more expensive. Mine is the "old" type of renovation done maybe two years ago. We have black counters, stainless and black appliances and tan cabinets. Bathrooms match.
DON'T live in apartments of westgrove unless you are really really broke and have no other option. That was our last place and it sucked.

Apartments (townhomes, actually) at Westgrove - 3.5/5 stars:
Rent was dirt cheap ~ $795/month for 3 bedroom/2.5 bath; tiny bedrooms...den/kitchen were pretty big. The A/C didn't work for probably 8 or 9 of the 12 months we were there. Maintenance came by several times to "make repairs" to no avail. Management (on site and I believe the lady's name was Jennifer) was very nice and understanding, considering we had parties there probably every weekend (the kitchen often resembled a third-world country). We occupied an end unit, so only had to deal with one neighbor (who was cool as shit). Ample parking (decent # of visitor spots as well), nice area in general, right across the street from Blue Ridge Movie Theater and its very own Wolfline stop. Also, walking distance to the Fairgrounds/Carter Finley/RBC.

University Glen - 2.5/5 stars:
$1000/month for 4 bedroom/4 bath - big rooms, walk-in closets, etc. Large den, kinda small kitchen. 2 buildings make up the entire complex so you get to know your neighbors pretty well (good/bad). Living walking distance from campus during undergrad was absolutely amazing. Numerous Wolfline stops nearby, and a dilapidated playground/basketball court by the parking lot. Kind of in a shitty area - a couple of our neighbors experienced break-ins and/or unwanted attention from random vagrants in the parking lot. Only visitor parking is on Marcom street, which is narrow as fuck (you will get towed if you park without a permit in the UGlen parking lot at night). Many of the apartments are individually rented; Preiss Company owns the rest. As has been stated multiple times, the Preiss Company is absolutely horrid. I will never, ever be a tenant of theirs again. They repeatedly "lost" checks from our entire apartment, hit us with random move-out charges, and employ utterly incompetent, uncooperative morons. PM for more!

Olde Raleigh - 3/5 stars:
$851/month for 2 bedroom/2 bath - big rooms, bigger closets, tiny kitchen, pretty big common room. Very cool management and very nice/responsive maintenance crew. Rent is a bit expensive but it's in a relatively nice area (off of Duraleigh). Tenants are mostly families (young kids), recent grads, and young professionals. Biggest knock is parking - there is literally none on the far side of the complex (where the buildings are clustered together more closely) after 9 PM weekdays/10-11PM weekends. That, and we've had a couple of incidences of car break-ins/vandalism over the past few months.

Moral of the story - The Preiss Company is fucking terrible.

I think i have more experience with Preiss Co. than anybody else on this message board.
I have lived at University Woods for 5 years. I was the first person to live in my unit, as the building had just finished being built. I should also say that University Woods is condominiums.
TPCO is just the property manager for 80% of the units. I am an owner, and VP of the HOA.

UWoods is a decent place to live. There are parties, but that happens at every college living complex. Parking is terrible (meaning you don't want to walk) unless you are in Phase 3, which is the back near the old scrap yard. There is plenty of parking. People complain about parking because they can't park in front of their building all the time.

Visitor parking is minimal. Towing is enforced from 11pm till 6am. This should give most reasonable people plenty of time to have guests over. Also, this helps deter massive parties. We switched to a new towing company recently and have had 0 problems or complaints.

There is a security company that patrols the parking lot every night, and longer intervals on the weekends.

my car got broken into at U Woods. the cops said it was like the 4th break-in that week. WTF how many does it take before they start keeping an eye on that place?

also, why not check Classifieds section, or the Technician. there's always people looking for a roommate. You can go check out each place and see how you like it.

^ they had a HUGE problem with that at Wolf Creek when i lived there. my roomate and his brother's cars got broken into the same night. all their stereo stuff (speakers, amps, headunits) got stolen. police said 15 or so got broken into the same night. all hondas, all the driver's side doors pried open from the top. crazy shit.

If you're going to live here at Avery Close, just make sure you get an apartment on the second floor if it's within about 20 ft of the parking lot. When the parties happen here (and they do happen here, and they will keep you up at night if you have ears), you will be able to hear every little joyous detail. If you're on the second floor townhouse (which would actually put you up on the third floor if you're sleeping at night, cause you get the second and third floor) you at least aren't RIGHT BY THE ACTION.

With that said, the windows here are as thick as paper, though the utilities here aren't bad. Parking here blows as there's assigned parking and no visitor parking outside of 5/6 "office" parking spaces in one part of the parking lot. Having guests over will be a bitch unless they can walk from Ivy Commons or Crest Rd. Rent here is about $700/mo right now for a 2br/2ba 1200 sq ft apartment. Live somewhere else unless you like student housing (Read: Parties that will periodically keep you awake and people coming and going at night which can wake you up sometimes).

It's far from the worst place, but it's also far from the best.

I've lived at both the Lodge at Crossroads and the Park at Crossroads. Both were great. Not too far from campus, and very safe and quiet.
