when i'm writing a program, i try to store my dates as yyyymmdd without any sort of delineation...really, it works well because everything will be in order and there's no sort of extraneous characters to worry about (not that they're a huge deal, but still!)
i was converting over an old PHP program the other day, and they had stored dates as one of these three:
1.) dd/mm/yyyy 2.) mm/dd/yy 3.) mm/dd/yyyy
i don't understand the complete lack of consistency, but who knows?

I always write dates like: 20 April 08, but that's just leftover military shit. 4/21/2008 10:58:37 AM |

well, the problem with that (IMO) is that then, when you're sorting, you can't sort by the first number because it's just a day (well, you could, but that's kind of pointless)...if you write the year first, and then the month, and then the day, all of your entries will be in order (either ascending or descending)
generally, grouping by year is paramount, followed by grouping by month...ordering by day after that is key
it's annoying because everyone has their own way of doing it, and i HATE working with programmers that do it differently than i do because i can't really think of any reason why you'd want to do it any other way
