i'm thinking this is fake. too much torque for him to hold on. his arms would have been literally pulled apart from his body.
^^ oh i see now. damn he might be dead then.

nope. the torque from the engines is too much for a human arm to hold on the plane. or if i am not right , please put me in the know. 4/21/2008 10:40:43 AM |

^ torque is a rotational force, not a lateral one. Shit I was an econ / business major and I know that.

Torque is a rotational force. If this video were not fake, the kite surfer's initial injuries would be due to his mass accelerating at a high rate due to the momentum of the plane. 4/21/2008 10:44:17 AM |

yes things rotate to make the plane move IN A GENERALLY STRAIGHT LINE. While travelling in this straight line, the plane would injure the fictitious kiteboarder. 4/21/2008 10:46:10 AM |

i think seedless is thinking of a car's torque, in which case he would be right
but this is a plane, they have thrust 4/21/2008 10:46:51 AM |

no, a car's torque is also rotational.

i am not saying i am not wrong. i am saying just tell how there is absolutely no torque involved in the movement of that airplane and i will believe it.
^^ oh ok. thanks for not being an asshole and telling me something that i did not realize.

I just said there was. I'm not trying to be an asshole, perhaps my initial response was a smartassed one, my apologies.
You should know, however that the plane, in this scenario, would not apply torque to the body of the kiteboarder and that the video is fake. Thank you.

i just meant that on a car, the torque is measured to show how much force the wheels put on the pavement to make it move 4/21/2008 10:49:09 AM |

no, he would still be wrong. Torque in a vehicle is a measurement of the vehicles ability to accelerate, but only because of the engines ability to generate rotational force around the crankshaft. Again, torque is measuring rotational force and is only an indicator of lateral acceleration.
Yes the engines are spinning, but their rotation is perpendicular to the direction of flight and thus not the force acting directly on the kite boarder. It is the force turning the turbines which convert part of said torque into lateral energy.
^ it is a jet. ]4/21/2008 10:50:20 AM |

assuming you mean the chute got snagged on a car somehow, this still wouldn't be a case of torque.
The simple fact is, torque was the wrong word to use in this situation. That's been established, can we move on now?4/21/2008 10:50:42 AM |

what we are dealing with here are shearing forces that would have broken all his rigging/tore his chute and dropped him in the water...no way he could have been snapped up and gone from ~5mph to ~200 mph immediately. something has to give. 4/21/2008 10:50:59 AM |
