When I close my laptop, it goes into some sort of standby or hibernate mode, but the other day it just quit doing it. I don't recall changing any settings to make it not do that any more. How can I go back to having it go into standby/hibernate when I close it?

check the power control panel

there should be a section asking what you'd like your computer to do when the lid is closed

if it's not that, then my next guess would be the switch is broken. they're usually at the top of the keyboard, it's a little pin-looking thing that sticks up maybe 3mm from the case that gets pressed down when the screen closes on it.

who made your laptop?

the setting for when the lid is closed remains set to go into standby mode

I'm not seeing this pin-looking thing however

laptop is a dell inspiron 1520
