They originally had the ram because of Jack Merrit... a UNC fullback known as the 'Battering Ram'.


They brought a ram to 'cheer him on'. After his graduation they just kept the ram on the sidelines and he became thier mascot.

The cheeleader came up with the ram idea as the physical mascot b/c one of their famous players at the time had the nickname the "Battering Ram". Yeah it's stupid I know. At least with Tennessee the blue tick coonhound Smokey is a represenative of their state's heritage.

Personally if my school had a ram as a mascot (thank god we have a vicious pack of wolves instead), I wouldn't mind seeing it with a broken off horn. It's the equivalent of battle scar and demands respect. Do rams grow their horns back like other animals?
