Ok this is crazy. I wish i had waited to get my phone, but for any of you guys wanting to sign up with AT&T, amazon will be be selling (or rather giving away) phones for free or actually paying you to get the phone (for example the blackberry curve is selling for -75$) which means you get 75$ from amazon after the rebate. (w/ a 2 year contract obviously). I just think it's a great deal. You can get a Tilt for free.

My question is, how does amazon make money? Do they get a big commission from at&t for signing up customers or something?

i think that when you sign up through amazon, you are essentially signing a contract with both at&t AND amazon, so if you break your contract you have double the early termination fees.

at least that's the way it used to work, it might be worth it to read up on that.

I've bought three different phones off Amazon, two with Nextel, one with Verizon, and that wasn't the case. I just had a standard contract with the provider.

it's alright i'm waiting for this and its lovely 3 inch 800 by 480 display (take that 480 by 320 iphone):

it's also got a track pad instead of directional buttons which is a plus. And the qwerty keyboard looks great and easy to use. Hopefully it'll be out soon and won't cost 800$.
