I need to get the front-right upper ball joint replaced on my '95 Ford Explorer. Anyone here know a good place to have this done? Similarly, is there a reputable parts supplier or should I just leave it up to the individual fixing it?

^no
The ball joint is built in to the upper control arm. You replace the whole thing. Once you get the spindle out of the way there are just two bolts that hold the control arm to the frame.
To the original poster: check around for prices, this is a common job. You will likely need an alignment after the repair, I recommend Gowers' on south Saunders. As far as parts go, moog makes a good part.

I found moog for sale online for $49.98 from autopartswarehouse.com. Would it be best to go ahead and get the parts online so the shop doesn't need to?
Thanks for the info lmnop!4/25/2008 11:18:15 AM |

No, any shop can get the stuff. Many shops will not warranty parts supplied by the customer. 4/25/2008 11:36:54 AM |

Gowers' on south Saunders gave a verbal quote of $185 for everything. I only asked a few other places and they gave higher numbers (Firestone quotes $298). Does $185 sound reasonable or should I keep looking? 4/29/2008 10:42:37 AM |

are you getting an alignment to for 185
Firestone is more cause they are Jewish with parts prices but they also may have offered you the lifetime alighnment. still under 200 is good for parts labor and an alignment
