my grandma always put sugar and salt in shakers, she had a big shaker (like the tall parmesan shakers at pizza places) for sugar. it had holes big enough for sugar to come out, but the rice wouldn't. one of grandma's many odd kitchen items.

Rice doesn't absorb water that easily, it just provides agitation to break up salt/sugar clumps 4/29/2008 10:34:38 AM |

In Georgia my brown sugar clumped like a mofo, but here I haven't had it clump up much at all. Weird. 4/29/2008 11:35:34 AM |

if you put a piece of bread, or a slice of apple in your brown sugar bag and let it sit for a while it'll help it to unclump 4/29/2008 11:43:51 AM |

i've seen a few kernals of white rice put into a salt shaker to keep moisture out of the salt, but i've never seen anyone store rice in a bunch of salt or sugar. that just doesn't make sense to me.
