until i read this. sad that a fucking violent movie actor would be against violent videogames.
Quote : | "Report: Damon objected to Bourne Conspiracy violence
As evidenced by Sir Anthony Hopkins' appearance in Ubisoft's movie-to-game tie-in for Beowulf last year, a growing trend in the film adaptation business is for top-tier Hollywood talent to cross over into the gaming spectrum. However, when High Moon Studios and Sierra Entertainment's Robert Ludlum's Bourne Conspiracy is released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 3, it will be both be a year behind the last Bourne film and noticeably lacking the movie's iconic star, Matt Damon, as Jason Bourne.
The first oddity can be answered by the fact that the game has more to do with Robert Ludlum's novels from the early '90s than the recent Tony Gilroy-penned movie scripts--though, as noted in GameSpot's previous coverage, Gilroy contributed to the game's story. MTV's Multiplayer blog reports that the second is due to Matt Damon backing out of the role.
Speaking to MTV, High Moon Studios business director Meelad Sadat said that Damon backed out of negotiations to lend his voice and likeness to the game while the project was still in an early stage. The reason? According to Sadat, Damon was affronted by the game's violent, interactive nature.
While Damon himself gave no official explanation, it could be noted that Nancy Carlsson-Paige, Damon's mother and professor of education at Lesley University, has been publicly critical of violent games in the past, saying to The Boston Globe that she and her son share views that violence in films should not be promoted through "violent toys, products, and video games."
Sadat said the studio wasn't too broken up over not having Damon associated with the project, as it gave the team more freedom to build their own Jason Bourne not beholden to action star's version of the character, according to MTV. " |

I don't care. I pretty much regard all celebrities' political views as meaningless since they're supposed to entertain and not much else. It's my same reasoning for sitting through new Tom Cruise movies.
FWIW, he may feel that the violence in his movies might be a necessary and justified component to the story. They may be the primary reason people come to the theater, but they make sense in the context of the film. Conversely, in video games and toys, the violence takes center stage and the plot, story, and characters take a backseat to it. Gamers are more interested in weapons and combat than story.
His reasoning doesn't matter anyway. He could say something stupid like "video games cause school shootings and should be banned" and I wouldn't care. He's a celebrity, not a sociologist/psychiatrist/whatever. 4/30/2008 1:50:02 AM |

its kind of hypocritical but not video games are targeted at kids and grown ups with developmental problems but his movies are R rated so its two different things
i can see doing one and opposing the other
also his mother cant stop him doing movies but she can tell him not to endorse a game 4/30/2008 3:06:39 AM |

random question. do they really enforce the ratings on video games like they do with movies? i always hear about parents being pissed about their child playing grand theft auto and stuff, but their kid shouldn't be able to play it until their of age (17ish), right? 4/30/2008 9:16:04 AM |

yeah and who do you think plays GTA most, adults or kids
if you want an adult game look at WoW, otherwise, kids dominate other games just cause it has violence doesnt mean only adults will play it

^^at this point, most if not all major retailers do enforce it. 'kid friendly' stores like wal-mart, toys'r'us and EBgamestop punish employees who sell M games to minors, while other places may or may not have more of a "be sure to check ID *wink* " policy

^ ok, cuz i do feel that violence in video games is different than in movies due to the fact that the user controls the level of violence. so if mr damon is against video game violence because it can easily fall into impressionable hands, i can see his point. but just being against violence in video games as an action movie star is kinda absurd. 4/30/2008 9:27:31 AM |

The main problem with violence/sex in video games is that they are called video games. People see the words games, automatically think of shit like Mario, and associate it with kids. As long as that's true, people will always look down on that stuff in video games because they feel it's being marketed to kids.
That is, until the video game industry passes the movie industry in revenue generated (not too long from now, thxu Wii), then all this shit will be forgotten and it will be all about how much sex and violence they can cram on a disc because that's what sells. 4/30/2008 9:30:43 AM |
Wraith All American 27257 Posts user info edit post |
^^I'll agree with you on that one. If someone thinks that violence in video games is bad, then they simply shouldn't let their kids play violent video games. It doesn't mean that violence should be taken out of all video games. And saying that anyone who isn't a kid that plays video games has "developmental problems" is ridiculous.

obviously adults play GTA too, but in almost every case the largest chunk of players are kids so with that in mind you have to consider what is being put out there its like making Captain Morgan lollipops its for adults but kids will get their hands on it4/30/2008 9:39:09 AM |

i think the real point that the whole kids and violence in video games fail to see it that most people, kids and adults, can distinguish the difference between virtuality and reality. heres my point: if you watch a movie of a bank heist, one might think, damn that might be possible, and has no means of 'toying' with a violent fantasy, except of physically doing it. say if you are playing gta, you know good and well that you can't jack car, pull off casually, ride around the block, jump out, shoot 3 people, get back and pull off casually... wash, rinse, repeat. in other words, it is letting you 'toy' with what people love the most... violence! what is always top stories in the news? what is always what school-would-be-shooters idolize? what do suicide bombers take after? you pretty much guessed it - REAL humans that did what they want to do, not what something that is obviously so absurd as the violence is in gta. 4/30/2008 10:10:22 AM |

^dumb^10
so toying with something will diffuse your interest in it? if you practice stealing and killing on a game and get good at it, knowing the risks and rewards, what will prevent you from actually doing it if you think you'll get away with it. without the game, the whole things is a mystery and you will be afraid of what could happen, but with a game you face those fears and practice your skills.
i understand that for some it only is exercising a fun idea to just do whatever you want but they have enough common sense and conscious to not actually do it but lets remember this is mostly played by kids, what do they know about restraint
if you play gran torismo all day and get good at virtual driving, you're more likely to push the limits in real life i know that happened to me, so it can happen to kids

Quote : | "Mothers against GTAIV's drunk driving MADD asks ESRB to rerate Rockstar's game Adults Only over inebriation simulation. By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot Posted Apr 30, 2008 2:46 pm PT
Much like its unfortunate series of protagonists, the Grand Theft Auto series seems to be continually under fire. The latest parental interest group to put the game in its crosshairs is Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which commemorated Grand Theft Auto IV's release yesterday with its own official statement decrying the game.
Noting that drunk driving claims nearly 13,500 lives each year, MADD said that it is "extremely disappointed" that the game lets users get virtually drunk and then get behind the wheel of an equally virtual automobile.
"Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke," MADD said. "Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime, and it is also 100 percent preventable."
MADD is asking the Entertainment Software Rating Board to bump Grand Theft Auto IV's rating up to AO for Adults Only from M for Mature. The ESRB's content descriptors for the game currently include "use of drugs and alcohol." The parental group also said that it is asking the game's "manufacturer" (presumably Take-Two Interactive) to consider stopping distribution out of a sense of social responsibility, or out of respect for those who've been hurt or killed by drunk drivers. Quote : | " Video games don’t turn children into blood-thirsty killers – Harvard research PDF Print E-mail Games and Entertainment By Humphrey Cheung Friday, May 09, 2008 07:33 Cambridge (MA) – A pair of Harvard researchers say violent video games don’t turn children into killers. According to a newly published book, ‘Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do’, psychologists Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl Olson dispel common myths about violent games. In their two-year study, they found that there was no data to support any causation between games and real-life violence.
Kutner and Olson studied 1200 middle-school children in a $1.5 million federally funded study. Instead of studying the children in the laboratory, like other studies, the pair actually sat down and talked to kids after long bouts of game playing – sometimes in excess of 15 hours a week. The lucky kids played a variety of games from the very non-violent The Sims to grandma shooting, pedestrian bashing Grand Theft Auto.
They discovered that children who played violent video games – those rated Mature or above – were just relieving stress. Some children did exhibit some playful fighting after playing games, but this was similar to what children have always done after watching action or Karate-type movies.
51% of male children who played 15 hours or more of violent games per week were involved in fights in the past year compared to 28% who played regular video games. For girls, 40% of the violent game players were in fights compared to 14% of the non-violent players. Despite the figures, Kutner and Olson say this is just a correlation and that the fighting was probably due to an underlying psychological problem that children had before playing the video game.
Perhaps the most startling finding (at least for people the likes of Jack Thompson) is that boys that don’t play any video games at all are now considered to be socially inept. A danger sign for boys is “not playing video games at all, because it looks like for this generation, video games are a measure of social competence,” says Kutner and Olsen.
I wonder if Kutner and Olsen will now do a follow-up study to find out if the children who play GTA4 will have increased carjacking skills.
The book is currently listed on Amazon.com here. " |
