Quote :
"Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered the hallucinogenic drug LSD, has died of a heart attack at his home in Basel at the age of 102.

Mr Hofmann first produced LSD in 1938 while researching the medicinal uses of a crop fungus.

He accidentally ingested some of the drug and said later: "Everything I saw was distorted as in a warped mirror".

He hoped LSD could be used to treat mental illness, but it became a popular street drug in the 1960s.

'Turn on, tune in, drop out'

While working with the drug in the Sandoz pharmaceutical laboratory a few years after first producing it, Mr Hofmann ingested some of the drug through his fingertips.

He went home and experienced what he described as visions of "fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours".

The drug was popularised by Harvard professor Timothy Leary who suggested that people "turn on, tune in, drop out".

Rock stars and the counter-culture of the 1960s picked up LSD as a wonder drug but horror stories began to emerge of users suffering permanent psychological damage.

LSD was made illegal in many countries beginning in the late 1960s. "

No one listens to the mentally fucked up, the physically fucked up can't say anything and I'm pretty sure dead people have never said anything. No, I'd say it's definitely other people who say that.

i just think it is amazing that this dude lived to the age that he did. the discovery of LSD aside, he was a chemist his entire life and certainly worked with noxious chemicals that we now know to be carcinogens, mutagens and worse-- without that knowledge and without proper safety precautions. if you doubt that, his discovery of the effects of LSD upon the body is certainly proof- he wouldn't have gotten exposed and tripped balls if he had been wearing some gloves.

"LSD can help open your eyes," he once said. "But there are other ways — meditation, dance, music, fasting."

Even so, the self described "father" of LSD readily agreed that the drug was dangerous if in the wrong hands. This was reflected by the title of his 1979 book: "LSD - my problem child.""

some of you people are retarded

he might not have been a terrible person but anyone who has seen the terrible, long term effects on someone who lost it, wouldn't be calling him a "great man".

Plus, the dude lived to be 102. I'm in no way advocating this drug, I'm just saying people tend to generalize something like this unfairly. The guy said it wasn't for everyone. Of course someone with a preexisting mental illness shouldn't take it. The same way someone with a preexisting mental illness shouldn't do a lot of things.

STFU bigot

what does he, a scientist, have to do with the negative effects of irresponsible or improper use of a drug?

should the inventor of the atomic bomb be blamed if a terrorist nukes something?

how about whoever invented whiskey? they've sure got a lot of blood on their hands....

should the inventor of the wheel be blamed when someone gets hit by a car?

no

you are a fucking idiot

you're suggesting that he's responsible for every negative thing that resulted from his discoveries

damn you're a fucking moron

GTFO and get a clue

asshat

why don't you read what he has to say

oh, and

donate to m.a.p.s.
