I already have 3 machines on Folding at Home... Looks like the cheapest instock I have found is $390 total on eBay for a new one in retail box.

yeah, I've been trying to get one or two of these suckers. Fry's canceled my order earlier this week. God, they need to get a live inventory tracking feature for their website.

I have pretty much given up on locating one "in stock". It seems that all that come in are pre-ordered and I am left out.

So what I have done over the weekend is place a backorder with Buy.com and Amazon.com which both have it on-order. The only reason that I placed a on-order with them is because they let you cancel the order any time without fee's if you do so before the item becomes in stock. Most smaller places will not allow you to cancel a pre-order once you placed it. This way I can cancel them if I locate it somewhere or if one of the two beats the other.

But, with the processor being known for >4.0GHz overclocked. I doubt you will ever see it on a store shelve.

By the way if anyone wanted to know the specs of my new machine I am putting together...

Motherboard: ASUS P5E3 PREMIUM/WIFI-AP @n X48 $379
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 or Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (if I can find one soon!) ~$354
Memory: Corsair DDR3-1600 XMS3 DHX 4GB (2x2GB) 9-9-9-24 PC3-12800 $299 ZipZoomFly.com baby!!!
Hard Drives: 2x (Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB) $169 each
DVD Drives: 2x SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA $25 each Newegg.com !!!
Case: Antec Nine Hundred $119 buy from Intrex, no shipping charge!
Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W $124
Video Card: ASUS EN8800GTS/HTDP/512M GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 $189

yes, parts are very expensive now-a-days

but at least there are a few rebates on some stuff... but you will never avoid the premium prices on mobo, proc, ram.

I actually saved a shit ton on memory, average for 4GB of DDR3 1600 was well over $400 got it for $300.

Its not the greatest machine i ever built, actually its been several years since I upgraded... only thing i cheaped out on was the video card, I could have chosen a 9800 but why spend $600 on graphics when I don't play games, my main goal was processing power.

you don't play games, yet you bought an 8800GTS? you know you could've gotten and 8600GS for half that price.

Why is everyone worrying about how much things costs? I never said that the price was bothering me.

^ also to note, NVIDIA never made a 8600GS http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html

I know you saved $50 on the ram but I feel that the loose timings are going to kill your bandwidth. May I suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220275 since you are building a bad a$$ number cruncher and not a gaming rig.

^ Yes, I previously looked at that memory on newegg, but the reviews and problem people were having with the timings in particular made me feel uncomfortable with it. Plus it $100 more than the Corsair at ZipZoomFly.

I looked all over for ram, and the simple fact of the matter was, if I wanted to get great timings on the memory say 7-7-7-20 or so, it was going to cost me $550+ for 4GB (2x2GB). I wasnt prepared to pay that much.

I had planned on getting the 9-9-9-24 and testing it a bit, and seeing if its good enough for me. I dont feel from a theory that I am going to notice it at all. But for $300 the 4GB, 9-9-9-24 was a great buy.

so exactly why did you choose to jump to DDR3? i haven't seen anything yet that justifies the a) cost or b) performance.

it still seems expensive and nearly all the DDR3 i've seen has horrible timings (yes i know timings are looser than DDR2 by default) but STILL... doesn't seem to help performance by much.

well, since most of the new motherboards are DDR3 only, thats the way things are going...

later on down the road I will be able to put better timing ram in it, but I wasn't really worried how much it costs

as for the dual socket response, i wasnt ready to spend twice the amount on the three main parts, proc, ram, mb

X38, X48? P35? nforce 780i? these are all semi-new chipsets that support DDR2, not ALL new chipsets are DDR3

400$ for a board is quite comfortably into dual socket territory, and 350$ for the processor leaves you room to drop back a couple speed ratings on the processor while still nearly doubling your performance

Cant buy this from micro-center online, you have to luck out and one of the Brick and Mortor store have one.... Thats a long shot, no one has these! Micro-Center is famous for doing this, its basically a draw to get you into the store. And often you can read reports of, if you call them they want tell if they have any in stock, only to come and see!

Just got my tracking number for mine I ordered from Amazon through TigerDirect on Friday!!!!

Congrat's!

Mine is being delivered today!

Looking forward to overclocking to 3.2GHz, its really a great value to buy a $350 processor and get the performance of the Core 2 Extreme ($1200).
