Happening on almost all sites that require a login (except ESPN) and in my Outlook for my Gmail accounts.

IE 7 error message (when navigating to site): "The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server."

Outlook error message (for gmail send/rec): "Internet Security Warning: The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that could not be verified. A certificate chain processes, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the provider. Do you want to continue using this server?"

Any suggestions? I found other people w/ the same google/outlook error via google search, but no solutions.

I'm delaying logging into my bank until I figure this out

It kinda sounds like you need to do an update of your root certificates (though you didn't say if you were using XP or Vista).

See if that explains what you're seeing.

Also, ensure that the "Update Root Certificates" is checked under:

Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Update Root Certificates

Report back if this doesn't work.

Addendum: I asked someone about this and he reports that there are known instances of horked installs of IE7, especially when using Automatic Updates.

He suggests reading this link http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install and then following the instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling using the following link as the source:

^ hmm... here's an update after browsing through the above info (thank you!):

-I am running Windows XP
-I am having the same problem now with Mozilla, so I think it's a problem with my internet settings in general and not specific to IE 7.0 (unless it's IE messing the settings up)
-The update root certificates box is checked

Short of a full uninstall and reinstall of IE, any other things I should look for?

When you browse to a secure site in Firefox and it gives you the warning, click on View Certificate. What does it list as the common name for both "Issued to" and "Issued by"?

Just launching FireFox (which goes to google as my homepage) lanuches a website certification notification... here's what it reads:

issued to: (common name) http://www.google.com
issued by: (common name) Thawte SGC CA

For login.live.com:

issued to: (common name) login.live.com
issued by: (common name) VeriSign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA

That's really strange that a certificate would be presenting itself on a non-SSL enabled page.

Here's another thing to try.

Open the browser, go to Tools > Internet Options > Content

and click the "Clear SSL State" button.

Update: I was on Clearwire over a wireless router (secured) today at work with NO PROBLEMS like this what so ever. I come home to Road Runner and it starts right back up.

I call Road Runner and after going through the basic let's set everything to default and clear anything stored up, they said "don't know... call Microsoft".

RIIIIGHT, like that's going to pan out. Save me tdub!!!

Post-Microsoft call: All I had to hear was "Welcome to Microsoft Fee-Based Customer Support". Screw that.

Do this. Open one of the pages thats giving you an error in IE7.

Click on the lock icon to bring up the cert. Click on the Certification Path tab and post a screen shot of it here

I don't have IE7 installed, so I'm kind of winging this suggestion. I tried looking around to see what the problem could be and ran across some obscure reference to a Miscellaneous tab in the Security Zones area.

If you see it, look under there and see if "Don’t Prompt For Client Certificate When No Certificates Or Only One Certificate Exists" is disabled.

^ I enabled that... I found it under in Internet Options --> Security --> Internet --> Custom... we'll have to see when I get back home (and back on RR) this afternoon if it does the trick. *Crosses fingers*

^^^ Ok, one of the websites in particular that I know I'm having trouble with, is not even displaying its lock at all. Some pages, like http://www.blogger.com, won't even open at all until after multiple attempts (just navigates to the same display you get when you're not connected to the internet). Nevermind, just had to dig more into the site (ie: get to a login). Here's what I've got:





Any other way I can find the certification path tab?

PS - Was back at work today on Clearwire with NO PROBS then right back to issues now that I'm back home on RR. AGAIN.
