for a Netgear wireless router

i need to set up my router, but i lost the CD. called up the Indians and they were of no help.

find a paper clip and google. look up the router, and then shove the clip into the factory default restore hole. follow directions found on google

Routers don't require CDs.

the setup CD that tells me how to set the shit up

obviously following that tutorial on the netgear website isn't working

so maybe the CD that came with the router that i seem to have misplaced would come in handy now

Have you tried reseting the router using the reset switch on the back (as someone suggested before)? That should reset the router to the factory settings and you can then access the configuration pages at http://192.168.0.1.

but here's a question: do i need to reset it when it's connected through the modem? or just when it's connected to nothing? or what?

the big issue is that when i have the laptop connected to the router and the router connected to the modem, i lose internet connection; thus, i when i type in that IP address, nothing comes up and i don't get that page that allows me to enter the user/PW

The router just needs to be turned on. It doesn't need to be connected to the modem or your computer when you reset it.

When you say you have the laptop connected to the router, do you mean wired or wirelessly? It depends on the default settings of the router after you reset it, but you probably need to initially configure wireless settings while physically connected to the router.

1) Turn off/uplug your computer, the router, and the modem.

2) Double check that everything is connected as in the picture above. Pay attention that the modem is connected to the router's WAN port and that the computer is connected to the LAN port.

3) Plug in the modem and wait for it to boot up. It probably has an 'Online' LED or something similar. Wait for it to come on.

4) Plug in the router and wait a few moments. Does the power light come on? Does the error light stay off? Does the internet light come on?

5) Turn on the computer and allow it to boot. Looking at the router: does one of the LAN port indicating lights come on? Looking on the back of the computer: are the LAN port lights on (if you have them)?

6) I assume you're using Windows...

Press Windows key + R
Type 'cmd' and press enter. A shell should open.
In the shell, type 'ipconfig /all'.
Post the results.
