These are banned at NCAA games right? Regardless, I thought I'd mention they sell them at Dollar Tree in convenient red and white colors! 5/7/2008 1:59:38 PM |

The last game I remember having Thunder Stix at was the 2003 UVA game. People were throwing them off the upper deck and a few tried to see how far they could get them onto the field. I think one actually made it to the numbers.
I think Thunder Stix as well as other noisemakers are controlled by the league. The ACC outlawed artificial noisemakers after 2003. UVA fans were immediately heartbroken as they were well known for their Thunder Stick usage. VT gets around this by shaking their keys on 3rd down to help make extra noise. I've seen games in some of the smaller conferences where they still allow them. I think the WAC or Mountain West conference still allow them.

The SEC supposedly outlaws artificial noisemakers, but it apparently doesn't apply to Mississippi State and their cowbells. I hear that the people that are at the gates don't care about confiscating the cowbells b/c it's been such a longstanding tradition, despite a lot of the other SEC coaches publicly complaining about the cowbells. I think the cowbells just help put Mississippi State on or near equal footing with the huge stadiums in the SEC. It's actually good for the SEC as a whole b/c it makes it a more difficult place to play at. 5/7/2008 2:18:25 PM |

if you're talking about those inflatable things you hit together I think they're stupid, it just gives people an excuse not to cheer or yell when that would be more effective 5/7/2008 2:29:27 PM |

When what would be more effective? Construct a sentence properly.
Anyway, if they make a lot of noise, that's what we're looking to do. And it's not like you need your voice to bang two things together. 5/7/2008 2:33:45 PM |

It's a shame that these were "outlawed" because they got the students and even the alumni into the game even more. Or at least it appeared that way. 5/7/2008 3:00:03 PM |

All true. That and you couldn't stop at minimum 10,000 Bulldawg fans from bringing their cowbells into the stadium.
And let me testify, that shit is ridiculous. Holy loud as hell.5/7/2008 4:00:16 PM |

How is the atmosphere at Davis-Wade Stadium? I'd think that since it is more open than C-F, that it might not be as loud if they didn't have the cowbells. From what I hear C-F's bowled in effect helps funnel a lot of noise down to the field. I remember I brought my decibel meter to the 06 GT game and it was reading 108 decibels at one point. For reference I was on the front row of the NEZ for that game, so it might have been louder had I been in Section 7. 5/7/2008 4:47:09 PM |
