Aside from putting linux on it, is there anyway to download an app or something to download/play music?

Use the built in music DLNA music client. You can run a DLNA server on just about any platform and use the PS3 as a AppleTV type of device. It has great visualizations and such, plus you can output the music from the PS3 via optical cable to your $$$$ sound system.

All this wirelessly too ;-)

Enjoy!

Yeh i use TVersity to stream media from my PC through the PS3 to my TV/Stereo. Works awesome. any format that the PS3 can't natively handle can be transcoded in realtime as well. I havent found a file i couldnt play yet. I routinely stream my Itunes library (AAC, MP3, apple lossles, flac), as well as divx and xvid movie/tv rips, etc.

The server application eyeConnect for mac's is a great simplistic application to serve your iTunes music to your PS3 or any DLNA box for FREE!
