I use a punching bag as part of my workout routine. My wrists have been taking a beating, so I bought a pair of the Everlast gel-padded bag gloves this morning. After about 30 minutes, the right one was almost falling off my hand (yes, I put it on correctly).
Does anyone know of a better brand or type to use, so that I know what to get when I take these back tomorrow? 5/10/2008 5:07:02 PM |

If you're going to use a punching bag (I'm assuming a heavy bag here, not a speed bag) you need to get either hand wraps or gel wraps and then wear full size sparring gloves. There's no reason to try and tough guy it up and sprain your wrist or break a knuckle on the heavy bag. 5/10/2008 5:13:36 PM |

back when i was in shape, i had a pair of everlast and they were great, so i don't know what to tell you
maybe check amazon for product ratings of different types of gloves to get an idea of which ones are better/longer lasting/more reliable?
i'd be willing to bet that it was just the type/model of glove you got thats bad & that everlast as a company hasn't fell completely off the map in terms of quality 5/10/2008 5:15:30 PM |

um you are supposed to wear those as you would hand wraps
that is, under neath your boxing gloves
they arent meant to hit bags directly they are a substitute for hand wraps
i personally dont feel very comfortable with them though, i prefer wraps hand down

I used leather Everlast glove bags. The spots between my knuckles ended up raw without wraps pretty quickly. 5/10/2008 8:00:57 PM |

The leather/cloth/foam Century ones aren't quite as comfy as the neoprene/cloth/gel Everlast ones, but they took a helluva beating and didn't split or anything. They have built in wraps, which saves me from having to get those as well. They also have a bar in the palm that you close your fist around (ndmetcal suggested getting some with this feature) which is nice also. 5/12/2008 9:33:09 AM |

The Everlast gel gloves are designed to be used without bag gloves for light bag work, but they suck in my opinion. I hate the way it feels when you strike the bag and that gel causes your hand to squirm to the side.
You might want to take a break if you just started using the bag and your wrists are already bothering you. Your punching strength can increase very quickly, but it takes a long time for the tendons and ligaments in your hand and wrist to strengthen. Overworking in the beginning can cause damage that will stick with you for a long time.
And always wear your wrist wraps. Having your wrist fold over can take a long time to recover. 5/12/2008 10:03:13 AM |

^ I have been using the heavy bag for about 2 months now. I am usually very aware of my wrist position, and have only had a couple close calls with them folding back, which is why I wanted a pair of gloves with wraps. I totally agree with you on the gel gloves- total disappointment. 5/12/2008 10:06:01 AM |
