i noticed a metal futon frame out by the dumpster the other day and the dollar signs began to whirl in my mind--so how much money we talkin' here for ~50 lbs of budget steel?

yea probably a black metal futon frame worth nothing, although there is a scarcity of steel right now due to demand so you might get a few bucks for it

Scrap steel is going 13 cents a pound as of last Thursday. That was "clean" steal without any plastic and other stuff attached.
