Lets say a team is playing against a point guard whom cannot shoot three pointers and isn't really much of a threat to do anything else other than pass or perform a layup.
Is it feasible that the team would match their center to guard said pg solely so he can sag off and be available to help his teammates guard their men inside?
or even the extreme case not guard the guy at all and just play goalie?
Does this happen? 5/25/2008 9:34:05 PM |

It should have for Javi Gonzalez the first half of the year...
But Javi started to perform some three pointers by the end of the year.

NO, it doesn't
picture the center playing goalie leaving room for this pg to shoot... all the pg has to do is pass off and quick screen for a sg... easy points all day. bad strategy 5/25/2008 10:17:48 PM |

depends on the type of offense the team runs, and how quick the pg is
obviously he would have at least a decent amount of speed
the type of guy described sounds like jason kidd on offense....and i dont think using a center strategy on him would be the first thing i would do 5/26/2008 1:20:14 AM |

In the NBA you'd get a three second violation if you stayed in the lane.
The closest I've seen come to this strategy would be the way teams played Doug Gottlieb (Okla State) who now works for ESPN college bball.
He had all kinds of assist marks/records but he was probably the worst shooting guard in college bball history. Teams would routinely sag 5-10 feet off of him from anywhere on the court.
Check out these numbers:
FG: 32.5% Fr 41.4% So 31.4% Jr 41.0% Sr
3pt: 25.0% Fr 29.3% So 24.2% Jr 18.4% Sr (NINE TOTAL THREES MADE)
FT: 47.1% Fr 29.3% So 44.4% Jr 43.3% Sr
Those numbers are remarkably low especially when you consider the fact he was NEVER being guarded. 5/26/2008 10:02:17 AM |

It's a shame that his wikipedia entry makes no mention of how horrible a shooter he was 5/26/2008 3:48:26 PM |
