I'm writing a letter of interest for a job I am applying to at Barnard College

in my greeting section of the letter it is impossible for me to know what "Mr" or "Mrs" I am writing to as the only information that I have is that I should direct it to "Employment Manager"

so... do I say "Dear Employment Manager,"

seems kind of stilted

HALP!

^ I have always heard not to do this, you should try and find SOMEONE to address the letter to.

I never start letters off with "Dear"

Sounds like I'm a 9 year old writing a thank you note to his grandma for a birthday present

To each their own, though

"Dear Sir or Madam" seems to work but I have read that it might seem lazy or even rude

is "Attention Employment Manager" too spartan?

We had a EEOC training last week and the trainer said using "Dear" could be considered sexual harassment.

http://www.barnard.edu/hr/staff.html

if you think it's important, call the admin. assistant and find out who receives them

at least, that's what I've been doing in my own search

I'm thinking that its this woman, Barbara Stover
thanks for the link, btw

I had tried to search for that earlier but I'm on bootleg wireless atm

do you think it would be a horrible thing if I guessed that it was her and I was wrong?

question #2: how critical is my handwritten signature on this letter of interest if I submit it electronically?

sub-question: electronic submission versus paper?

^^I responded to an ad once that said to contact "Tommy Anthony". I addressed it to Tommy Anthony. In the ad, they actually meant for it to say "Tommy or Anthony". I still got the job.

Worst.

Entry.

Ever.

Did you not take Eng 331?

I would say 'Dear Employment Manager' if you absolutely cannot find out who you are emailing to. Can you not research or email a contact and find out who it is?

Edit: Read the thread; if you are concerned about it you could email Barbara or whoever and see if she's the contact. Even if its not it may get you some brownie points with the HNIC.

If there's an option for email or paper, a paper application may set you out with a physical application, or it may make a hassel for the HNIC because most of their applications are electronic. Or you could send electronic and physical? Tough call.
