some people say "aks" instead of "ask"

other people complain that those people can't speak english correctly

but the people who complain very often pronounce "iron" as "iorn"

which is the same mistake

SO SHUT THE FUCK UP

i think the proper pronunciation for iron is the the "I-iorn" sound

the proper pronunciation for ask is not "aks"

from dictionary.com: iron - [ahy-ern] ask - ahsk

it's an arbitrary movement from old english in opposite directions

they're both correct from an etymology standpoint

anyway

i'm just sayin'

Everyone who took the History of the English Language should know all about this.

In a way, I feel like people who complain about aks instead of ask because it shows a lack of education are really the ignorant ones.

There are a lot of ancient pronunciations from old and middle English that would annoy me if people used today.

I consider people who say /aks/ and /warshington/ typically uneducated. They're making shit up. Yes, it may have roots in old english, but weeds have roots too.

it all boils down to what society at large has accepted as the proper pronunciation
any variation will be treated with skeptisism from the elite

meaning its not about whats proper for the most people, its whats passed on

LOL by the elite? A majority of people use the word axe when referring to the common tool used to chop wood and ask when referring to a method for inquiry. The margins use /ax/ when referring to the method for inquiry, even though it has seeped into pop culture.

Or maybe this is my experience.

so if certain people pronounced "Flask" as "Flaks" and the "elite" found that retarded, it would just be another case of the elite being pompous skeptics with no basis?

^^^^well the fact that even the supposedly learned people have to research the real pronunciation of the word "ask" back to old english renders the common man virtually helpless in knowing how every word is supposed to be pronounced
therefore the masses are not generally led by whats proper but by what is accepted by the whole and the elite can have an great influence in this by declaring whats proper
the problem is they can do this for everything, so they have their drive by attacks on certain words that also have secondary political implications
in this case ask/axe ambiguity mirrors a larger conflict between the educated and ingnorant, or north and south

This may be true, but the whole ask/aks thing is because black people often say it aks (which is mostly due to how black-American culture developed from slave days to now), and white people like to find as many reasons to bitch about blacks as possible.

^^i thinks thats exactly what i said in ^^^

and i dont agree with ^, people have a right to maintain their culture i think but the whole black/white issue doesnt apply cause african americans can basically choose however they want to form their culture i think....within reason
