needs to happen to save gas. quick fix and everyone loves a 3 day weekend.
I'd much rather work 4 10-hour days than 5 8-hour days. 6/3/2008 10:46:03 AM |

i hate how all the sci-fi novels i read that were written in the 1970's talk about how most people won't go to work around the early 2000's anymore b/c they can work from home on computers.
plz make this happen soon ppl. 0 gas for work = $$$$ extra 6/3/2008 10:49:47 AM |

i drive a lot more on the weekends than on weekdays.... on work days, i commute ~10minutes each way. On weekends i end up driving a lot to do things like mountain biking, hardware store, etc. If i had 3 day weekends, i'd probably end up taking even more trips to the mountains 6/3/2008 11:02:34 AM |

I'd like to see a study of workplace productivity for Fridays. I am in sales and don't (and never have) done much on Fridays, unless it is the last day of the month. It's not by choice, it just seems like more people are away or golfing after 12:00 or whatever. Plus, 1/2 my business is International, which is at least seven hours ahead of my time zone, so it's near the end of the day when I come in. 6/3/2008 11:16:23 AM |

we did the 4 10-hour day thing a number of years ago...it worked ok as long as you had some people there on Monday and some on Friday...seems like something company-to-company though...i dont want the govt mandating work weeks

The company I work for has done every other friday off, or 4 10hr days (depending on the project you are on) for a long time now (way before i've been here of course) and it certainly hasnt hurt their competitiveness...
3 day weekends for the win.

^^ With regards to a 4 day workweek? or working from home?
Working form home for manufacturing, etc. doesn't seem economically viable... If you mean the work week in general, seems like it could work. There's a lot to consider there though... In some manufacturing jobs an 8 hour shift is about all the human body can physically manage before the workplace becomes unsafe. It's a cool thought that folks who are in large part, hurting the most due to the rising cost of energy could possibly be helped here... but there are also issues to consider like quality of life at home if #1 Breadwinner isn't home for another two hours later 4 days out of the week... would it the benefit of being home all day Friday be enough to offset this socially? 6/3/2008 11:55:56 AM |

shouldn't be the gov't job to make such policy. However, from my experience at least in Tech many company have adopted flex-hours which pretty much allows one to do something similar. This was especially true at Cisco; where many people opted to "work" from home many given days. Don't get me wrong though. they had extensive ways of measuring productivity. They may be slack on when you are "at" work but they EXPECT you to get done what needs to get done. 6/3/2008 12:05:52 PM |

longer DMV hours during the days people work would make it easier for people working 9-5 to get in.6/3/2008 12:33:14 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148444 Posts user info edit post |
oh i guess you meant state workers and not all workers in that example...i was thinking the 9-5 people would now be 8-6 or whatever in which case they'd pretty much be working the same hours as the DMV
or maybe 7 or 7:30 to 6pm to factor in a lunch break

well i'm assuming that in the private sector it would be up to each company to determine if it was a 4 or 5 day work week and the hours, unlike the guvment which could make a blanket decision. 6/3/2008 12:52:55 PM |

Who wouldn't? I've actually done this kind of thing at work before and the employees love it. The key is just making sure you have enough coverage to get the job done. Given the option of 8-6 vs. 9-5 but with one less day most folks would choose 4 10-hour days. It's just harder to schedule because most places need to be fully staffed whenever they're open and the bottom line is that the needs of the business, not the desires of the employees, dictate the way people are scheduled. 6/3/2008 2:28:53 PM |

most state and government employees in general have a work ethic equal to "work just hard enough not to get fired."
I worked IT for the NC forest service downtown in college. It was a few full-timers and I was a "temp" to help out with all the extra work in preparation for y2k. For the first month, it seemed like my peers hated me, and I couldn't figure out why. Then my boss approached me and told me that I needed to slow down because I was making everyone else look bad, and they didn't like it. The sad thing is that all we were doing was installing software updates on PCs for the most part. click, click, click, wait, and done.
So I started doing actual work for an hour a day instead of the 8 that I was being paid for in order to blend in with everyone else. Then everyone was cool with me. It was disgusting, and I had no respect for those people.
I guess that's what it's like to be a union guy too. I don't know how these people can look themselves in the mirror 6/3/2008 4:03:33 PM |

anecdotal evidence abound in this thread.
The majority of state employees are invisible. They are locked away in meetings or working on projects. Sure, the DMV sucks, but that isn't generally the result of the employees. 6/3/2008 10:47:21 PM |

I kind of like this. And who says the 4 day work week has to be M - Th. You could stagger it with some people working M - Th, some working T - F, some working W - Sat, etc etc . . .
Quote : | "most state and government employees in general have a work ethic equal to "work just hard enough not to get fired."" | When I temped for the state, most of the people I worked with were pretty hard working and fairly customer friendly. A few of them though . . .
I've always said that if I had a superpower it would be flirting with middle-aged, disgruntled, female, government employees. Give me a week and they're usually eating out of the palm of my hand . . . My secret? Bojangles biscuts for breakfast.
