to fix a deviated septum (cartilage between the nostrils). So I was being wheeled into the OR... it's freezing and I'm a bit nervous... there were like 8 nurses doing stuff to me and one nurse was waving that happy gas that makes you go to sleep around my face... One nurse grabs one arm and ties it down in an outstretched manner and another nurse grabs my other arm and ties it down so I basically have both arms wide open... right before I went to sleep the last thing I remember was saying "You guys aren't going to do the same thing to me that you did to Jesus, are you?"
I remember hysterical laughter... then nothing.
The doctor corroborated my story when I saw her this morning and she said "do you know what you said before you went to sleep?" 6/3/2008 11:29:40 AM |

I never knew I had one until the doctor told me. Before the surgery and after she told me I had one, I could put my finger in my nose and literally feel one side of the septum was pushed over to the side.
She also did a turbinoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery. So she did 3 procedures that she says that I will hav eno idea how I lived without all my life. 6/3/2008 11:36:28 AM |

^^^^ likely. I never had my nose broke so I just never knew the difference. My constant congestion was enough to send me to the doctor to where the doctor definitely recommended the surgery.
I've been in quite a bit of pain since yesterday since my nose is raw, but she says by next week, I would do it 10 times over.

but my unit took care of a lady several years ago that had the surgery done.... they punctured her ethmoid plate. she got a raging menigitis and became brain dead

No, never used afrin before until post surgery and upon doc's recommendations.

Her name was Irenee Duncan of North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. You can have complications depending on which sinuses they have to operate on. fortunately for me, the three procedures she performed were near the front of the nose and face and were not very intrusive when speaking of the sinuses. You do run into risks though when operating with sinuses given what you said plus the proximity to the orbital lobe.6/3/2008 1:06:16 PM |

Take this with a grain of salt. It definitely can help some people drastically, but I had about 47 things done with my nose, nasal passages and sinus cavities at once and now I still get chronic sinus infections, am constantly congested, and can't drink a single beer or coffee without being able to feel it in my sinuses (alcohol and caffeine do fun things to your sinuses, but most people just never notice it because the effect isn't pronounced enough; I notice it after half a beer).6/3/2008 1:23:23 PM |

i had one of these done like 4 years ago. best thing i ever did. used to get sinus infections once a month like clockwork, now i only get 3-4 per year. i know thats still bad, but a lot better than it used to be 6/3/2008 1:39:46 PM |

Have fun douching your nose!
My dad had this done not that long ago, his deviated septum was pretty severe. Couple that with his sleep apnea and it's amazing he didn't just pass out from exhaustion all the time. Anyway, he said the worst part has having to mix up what basically amounts to douche (distilled water, baking soda, vinegar) and shoot it up one nostril and squeeze the bottle until it pours out the other nostril. A delightful mixture of blood, snot, and douche. 6/3/2008 1:49:38 PM |

Me too!!!
I discovered sinus washing a couple of years ago. It is fantastic! I have lots of problems with my sinuses because I have a cleft palate, so I had multiple infections and trouble with congestion. I actually do not get as sick as often or have as much trouble with allergies since I started using it. Not to mention, you can clear out a stopped up nose without meds. Shweet!6/3/2008 7:56:03 PM |

I have not breathed through my nose now in 4 days... it's killing me. I can't blow my nose, I can't as much as think about it. I have splints and crap up there... this is terrible.
At least the bleeding has calmed down. I still wake up every 2 hours the feeling of blood/mucus dripping out of my nose and onto my gauze pad. I haven't slept for more than 2 hours at a time in 4 days...
The doctor says this will be worth it... 6/5/2008 10:57:43 AM |

I have a slightly deviated septum (I think I've broken my nose before, but I'm not sure) but it doesn't inhibit my breathing. According to my dad after they finally pulled all the stuff out of his nose and unpacked the crap out of his sinuses it was a completely different feel. He likened it to the way it is when you first get glasses and you realize just how bad your vision was. 6/5/2008 11:15:55 AM |

that's almost exaclty what the doctor said. I questioned the necessity of the surgery. She said that I've been putting up with it for 25 years and don't know how much I can't breathe. She says after next week, I'll feel like a completely different person.
Boy I hope so because this is kind of brutal. 6/5/2008 11:47:59 AM |

She took all the stuff out of my nose yesterday... I've never been able to breathe like this before. ALthough my recovery was brutal, it was worth it. The doctor said that I had an allergic reaction to some of the gel she used for healing. I was so swollen it was causing pretty bad headaches and just general agony. She called the manufacturers of all of the drugs she put me on until she found a logical reason to why. I had a 1 in 10,000 reaction to the gel, according to the company.
Now I'm all good. I can breathe... yay. 6/17/2008 9:10:37 AM |
