people these days feel entitled to >20 percent for NO more work than people back in the day used to do who were happy to get a 10% tip. 6/3/2008 11:49:20 AM |

the best tables were when a group of like 10 teenagers sat down and started ordering everything on the menu.
you knew that they probably didnt have enough to cover their bill, and if they did, they definitely weren't leaving a tip. 6/3/2008 11:52:29 AM |

^^^Yeah.
I'm not trying to make a point about how much people tip. I don't care, I usually don't tip more than 15% myself. I don't know where Smath74 assumed I was talking about tip amount. But last week at my bar 'Old People' accounted for 250$ (10 different tabs) of what I sold and left a total of 5$ (2 of 10). It's frustrating.

my tip starts at 20% and I deduct for instances of bad service from thereon I also add for good service (at the very least I'll round up on 20% to make it an even bill)
the other day I had dinner with my gf at Max Brenner's on Broadway and I got the worst service of my life

I just meant tip amount, not necessarily how much it should be, just the fact it should be something. 5%, 10%, 15%, whatever. Just something. You implied I was feeling that 15% isn't enough and I should be make 20+%.

I still tip based on performance.
If I had an empty glass the whole night and no concern if my food was good, the lowest I've ever tipped was 12%, and that was me being unhappy. I'll never leave nothing (even though BEU and his friends did once, I left the poor girl a $20 gift card and wrote "sorry" on the napkin )
I had a pretty damn good waiter the other night that offered specials that were similar to what we were ordering to save us money. Glasses were always full or a new drink was brought before we were done. And, he was prompt as hell about the check and getting it rang up. I know sometimes they'll walk around to 3-4 other tables with your card in their pocket. 6/3/2008 12:03:14 PM |

if you keep coming back, and they know who you are and you don't give them any trouble, they're going to serve you better anyway
and in turn you're going to pay a better tip. 1. because you like going there and 2. because they serve you well
its a nice circular arrangement...not really a bribe
a bribe is like when you're at some shitty high class restaurant and you give the guy a $50 to skip ahead in line so you can sit before everyone else 6/3/2008 12:05:52 PM |

I waited tables going through optometry school. The bitch of it was if someone left a small tip or no tip, then you just paid to work that table. They took out a tipshare which was 3% of the bill, not the tip. So at the end of the night, I had to give 3% of the total charged at my tables for a tipshare between the hostess and backbar. So if someone doesnt tip, I just paid 3% of thier bill to wait on them. shitty. Im not sure how other resturants do it, but I always leave a good tip, unless its just terrible service, then its 10%.
I think you have to work on of these jobs to appreciate tips. 6/3/2008 12:14:37 PM |

Servers need to quit bitching. If they're not making enough in tips + regular salary to make minimum wage, their employers are required to make up the difference. Find a new job if you don't like how people don't tip for shitty service.
I'll always tip if the service is good...usually around 20%. But shitty service will get you much less, and sometimes nothing. And before people jump all over this post, I've worked as a server before, so I know what it's like.
