if memtest86+ goes through 11 passes without any errors and then has an error on the 12th pass, is that a "bad" thing? Trying to isolate a problem, so I'm just curious. Sorry if it's a dumb question :-/

it's not a good thing, an access pattern similar to the failing test pattern would be expected to result in errors within a similar time frame

my rule of thumb - let memtest run for 24hrs, if any errors, you got a memory problem.

Are you looking for a memory problem that you feel exists, or just hunting for one?

eh, trying to see if a problem is related to certain sticks of memory, the motherboard, or both.

Ah, well yea I'm agreeing that 1/12 fail rate is good enough for so called "random" lockups/reboots ... but if that's your problem, it also could be the motherboard/memory bank like ^^^ said. Typically when the memory starts going, you know it and can reproduce it regularly (ie, more than 1/12 of the time).

i had the exact same results with my Asus P5E3 Premium, with Corsair DDR3 ram.

After about 11-12 passes it would start failing one error on each subsequent pass, never before.

I RMA'd the motherboard and the ram I changed for another brand. Going with OCZ this time.

one more stupid memtest question - is 2 12 hour runs of memtest as good as a 24 hour memtest run?

Yes, but it's not as good as 1/2 of a 48 hr memtest run.

just an fyi - OC'ing the cpu can cause memory errors in memtest.
