Obviously, when referring to individuals this word can be offensive. Would you consider the word "ghetto" offensive when referring to an object? For example, if something fell of my bike and I used duct tape to put it back on instead of getting it fixed properly and I called that ghetto. Or if a button fell of my phone and I glued it back on

The brits called the germans the Jerries. So during the war (I'm drawing a logical connection here) calling something Jerry-Rigged likely was probably the same level of "insulting" that some of these *-rigged terms we use today are.

To me, "ghetto" means something repaired extremely cheaply, while "redneck" means something used for an entirely different purpose than what it was intended.

If I saw a car that had lost one of it's side mirrors, and it was reattached with large ammounts of duct tape, I would call it "ghetto"

If the same car was driving down the road and hand a handheld makeup mirror taped onto the door instead of the side mirror, I would call it "redneck"
