The RE5 racist thread does this topic no justice, and therefore should not be considered as a knowledge portal for the game. All new news, trailers, gameplay footage, and exchange of knowledge I hope will come to this thread.

RE4 is the best game ever to me. I have expectations so high for this game, anything less than perfect would be a letdown.

Aside from Ocarina of Time, RE4 is my all time favorite single player video game. I like what they are doing with the light/dark transitions, it adds another element of suspense and surprise.

Also, since this is a Resident Evil thread, this video should be posted:

Now Eminem is featured as a zombie in order to allow for ethnic diversity in the game.

We don't know where in Africa it is though. It could be some remote village where it wouldn't make sense to have too many white people. If you look at Resident Evil 4, the remote Spanish village didn't have any non-Spaniards, but there are plenty of them in Spain.

The others are similar.

So no, there aren't that many white people in this part of africa. At most there should be 2-4 white zombies(lol) per villiage, representing a missionary and his family.

i read an article about the Maasai tribe in National Geographic a long time ago. It was about how their homeland was being destroyed and local governments kept oppressing them. There was a photo of white tourists coming by in a van and taking pictures of them. It was kind of unsettling.

E3 '08: Resident Evil 5 Hands-On
We tear through two levels of Capcom's latest survival horror game.
By Ricardo Torres, GameSpot
Posted Jul 14, 2008 1:01 pm PT

We've been anxious to try our hand at Resident Evil 5 since we first got a look at the promising game earlier this year. The long-running series clearly found a cool new groove with the last entry for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 in 2005, and hopes have skyrocketed for this highly anticipated sequel. We got a chance to play a couple of levels of this survival horror game and lived to tell the tale.

Chris and Sheva are taking down zombies with extreme prejudice.

The first level that we tried was a short, tutorial-style run called "Assembly Place." Main characters Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar are in the back alleys of a shantytown when it starts. The first order of business is guiding the pair down a short path, at the end of which they drop down and enter a house. There were a few items to collect--ammo and health--on a dumpster by the door. The game's new co-op angle was front and center; the minute the option to collect the items came up, it was possible to direct Sheva to pick them up.

Once we guided Chris into the house, a lengthy cutscene kicked off. From the look of it, a fair chunk of the in-game cinematic has been shown in the previous trailers for the game. The action revolves around a dictator type speaking to a mob before an execution courtesy of a massive, hooded behemoth wielding a big axe. Shortly after the execution, the dictator spots Chris and Sheva; in retrospect, it probably wasn't the smartest thing for the pair to be watching everything go on while standing in the window. As you'd expect, the dictator and the mob aren't thrilled about the intruders, and the cutscene closes with him directing the mob to house.

We took control of Chris as the house came under siege by the masses, who could be seen through the windows. We had a few options as they started rushing, which were pretty interesting. We were able to push bookcases in front of the main door and one of the windows. We liked that; much like having the option to direct Sheva to collect items, we were able to get her to assist with the bookcase. Before we started pushing on our own bookshelf, we set her on the other, which was handy because time is of the essence when you're being set on by an angry mob. In the few seconds that we had left, we also collected loot from around the small house. As with previous games, the loot was laying in plain sight, and also hidden in drawers or left behind when smashing crates.

The level's pacing started with a slow burn, much like the first big rush of enemies in RE4, with the mob getting more and more aggressive in their attempts to enter. As we were getting our bearings, Sheva helpfully started shooting at anyone who showed their face in windows. We were actually able to take out quite a few by shooting them through the windows, but eventually the mob kicked in the main door and started streaming in. As if that wasn't bad enough, another highly motivated group started dropping down from a hole that they had made in the roof. The final kicker was when a massive, axe-wielding hulk smashed his way through the main wall...clearly a sign that it was time to get out.

We snaked past Mr. Axe and the enemies streaming into the house and took to the streets. Besides affording us more room to maneuver, the streets were littered with a number of useful items. There were crates to break that yielded assorted ammo, grenades, health canisters, and gold. More importantly, there were a few houses that we could loot, one of which contained an AK-47. Flammable barrels were the other useful element in the outdoors. Although they didn't explode, the fire that they kicked up took out most enemies, with the exception of the axe wielder who, we discovered, could kill us with just two hits.

Sheva is a formidable woman in RE5.

Thankfully, one of the best perks of having Sheva around was that, when Chris' health was low or when he was about to get killed by a second axe blow, she could restore some of his health. This doesn't mean that you won't die, because we did; Sheva needs to be near you when you're on the brink of death. Regardless, it's certainly a handy mechanic. Once we survived long enough, we triggered another cutscene that featured a military helicopter coming in and tearing things up with an aerial salvo that cleared out most of the enemies in the town center.

We explored the cleared town a bit and made our way farther up, coming across a few more enemies, including some Molotov cocktail-pitching ones. We were able to shoot the bottles out of their hands as they were getting ready to throw, which had the added bonus of setting the enemy on fire. This short segment also introduced a new flying enemy that was all about clinging to our face and murdering us. Thankfully, they didn't stand up to a volley of bullets. The level ended when we reached a large gate.

"The second level that we tried offered an even greater challenge but showed off more of the possibilities of co-op. The level, called "Shanty Town", started in the claustrophobic streets of a city. The initial run was simple enough, in that we guided Chris and Sheva through some gates and side streets, which had an assortment of ammo and health pickups. When we finally met with some enemies, they were fairly easy to deal with. However, things got complicated when our path through a building was blocked by a padlocked set of doors. We wound up heading to the top of the building and performing an assisted leap with Sheva to send her to a building across the way. Upon landing, she was beset by enemies and we were forced to cover for her, using a pistol or a sniper rifle, as she made her way down the building and onto the streets to the door blocking our way, which she helpfully opened.

Skip across the roofs of the shanty town before blasting zombie flesh.

Once the team was reunited, we started making our way up the streets, dealing with enemies and collecting loot. As we reached the end of the street we triggered a cutscene that introduced us to what is the front-runner on our most-hated enemy list in this game: a skinny, burlap-sack-and-hood-wearing, chainsaw-wielding fiend committed to gutting you. The skinny foe was agile and quick, which is a bad combination when mixed with the aggro-slash-crazy vibe he had going. The level ended when he was defeated, which took equal parts bullets, grenades, explosive barrels, and lucky dodging.

The two levels gave us a good sampling of the action that Capcom is packing into the promising game and also served as a good introduction to the co-op mechanic with Sheva. The demo's AI control of her was surprisingly helpful, which isn't always the case in games that pair you with an artificial buddy. She was handy and pretty aggressive when the action heated up. She got a little greedy with the loot at times, and she wound up Hoovering some much-needed ammo, but it's hard to hate considering how often she saved our life.

It's possible to share or request loot and weapons from Sheva, which helped make up for her acquisitive tendencies, although we wish that we could have split ammo to ensure that she wasn't left dry. The assisted jumping and climbing moves in the demo were similar to those in Army of Two, albeit a bit more straightforward; the moves simply involved a button press that triggered a short cinematic of the move executing. The life-saving bit was a nice touch that was actually dynamic and resulted in Sheva using a healing item if she had one, which would heal you both, or simply using an adrenaline shot that restored a small amount of life to you. You could return the favor during gameplay, given that she calls out for help when cornered. In the rare circumstances when she either wandered off during battle, or in which we were lost in a desperate rush to avoid trouble, we could call her back our way or locate her position by hitting a bumper and making our way to her.

The control scheme basically follows the RE4 model and adds new features, such as calling your partner and the new context-sensitive actions with Sheva, although so far we saw only a jump and a leap. Like before, you'll be able to aim and shoot with ease as well as use your knife when ammo is spare. You'll also be doing much shaking of the analog stick to get enemies off of you. The game handled well, and the new features fit in pretty seamlessly once you adjust to them.

The visuals in the game are looking fantastic, even in the work-in-progress version that we played. The game is sticking close to the gritty, realistic art style of RE4, which works well with its African setting and the tone. The color palette is a bit washed-out but the gray hue adds to the grim feel of the proceedings. Likewise, the character models look great and feature a ton of detail. We especially like how your enemies occasionally have their faces burst into tentacles when you're getting attacked, which raises some questions about what the heck is going on. The new destructible elements in the environment are a cool albeit unsettling touch. There's an added sense of danger now because nowhere is 100 percent secure or safe. As far as performance goes, the game purred along nicely, although there were some obvious work-in-progress loads for the cinematics.

Skinny guy with a chainsaw? Not good.

At the moment, Resident Evil 5 is looking like a wickedly good debut for the series on the current generation of consoles. The game appears to be building smartly on RE4's winning revamp of the series. The addition of Sheva is interesting and the promise of online co-op play has us really excited. Though the gameplay may be pretty similar to that in the previous game, that's hardly a fault. Resident Evil 5 is slated to ship on March 13, 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Look for more on the game later this week at E3 when we'll have it live on our stage show and in the months leading up to its release.

Now I want to play RE4... since I haven't even seen the game yet. I only had code Veronica on the Dreamcast and I didn't like it at all. I got about 30 minutes into it before shelving it forever.

RE4 seems to have rave reviews all around though. Is is similar to code Veronica? Do you still have to find a gun with only 4 bullets and face a zombie horde where every zombie takes at least 4 clips to kill?

Also in that gameplay video (#2). It seems kind of jerky and slow. Is that just they way the person is playing the game, or is that how you do things? A group of zombies breaks into your hut. You have a gun. It's obvious what you should do. A few jerky motions, turn pivot, watch the zombies, a few jerky steps, watch some more, anything so long as it isn't attack.

re4 gameplay is just like it is in re5, except stuff like the punches are not there. trust me, if you want to call yourself a real videogamer, you HAVE to play this game. its worth it to buy a gamecube and this game. if you can play it on a wii then cool, but all you need is the gamecube version. re4 is NOTHING like pass re games. you will be shocked.

here is the best video review of it, the best video review of a game ever for that matter

no. the game is pretty good about keeping you stocked with ammo. in previous RE games i usually did a lot of running away from zombies since they took so long to kill, and ammo wasn't as easy to come by. in RE4 you can pretty much take out anything you come across without hesitation. shoot their legs and then their heads while they're on the ground ftw

Perhaps the biggest gripe I had about Code Veronica was the control scheme. They still used the up means forward, left and right means pivot scheme. I could NEVER get into any game with that control scheme. RE4 obviously doesn't have that flaw. Thanks for the video, checking it out now. I'd have to get the PC version, not a console version.

Read some reviews for the PC version. Looks like they flubbed the port. I've heard that it supports the 360 controller and that there is a mod to map the buttons, so I'll still give this one a shot.

i think i've played every major resident evil game and can say i enjoyed them all - some more than others

the first one was the reason i bought a playstation (def a classic - i even have the remade version) but 4 is the most fun to play

i still love the silent hill games too - i wonder if they'll make a new one because those games scare the poo out of me

the fucked up thing is that I think that made those games. You ALWAYS had to go back and scour for ammo, I hate how Survival Horror games have lost the Survival aspect.

"Resident Evil 5 Demo In Early 2009
By Kemuel Stewart · October 2, 2008 · Post a comment

That’s right. Sometimes reading does gives you new information even when your not looking for it. According to the newest issue of GamesTM Magazine, Capcom is planning to release the demo for Resident Evil 5 in early 2009. There wasn’t any information given on if it will be the same demo that was shown a E3 or even the Games Convention. So keep an eye out for new information in the upcoming months, we will be contacting Capcom for more information."

"Resident Evil 5 Demo Hits Next Week
Capcom delivering demo to Xbox 360 owners.
by IGN Staff

November 26, 2008 - Capcom has a big pre-Christmas surprise on the way for Xbox 360 owners: a demo of Resident Evil 5!

Famitsu reports in its latest issue that a demo of the latest and greatest in survival horror will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace starting December 5. Players will be able to sample two stages of play set in that familiar urban setting from past game show demos. These stages will be playable both offline and through co-op.

There are a couple of caveats about the demo. First, only Gold Members will have access to it. Second, as Famitsu is a Japanese magazine, the demo is only confirmed for Japan at the moment. Of course, given how things have worked out in the past with Xbox Live, it's reasonable to expect the demo elsewhere throughout the world around the same time.

For PlayStation 3 owners, we're sorry to report that Famitsu doesn't make any mention of a demo for that version of the game. This is presumably an Xbox 360 exclusive.

In other RE5 news, Famitsu also reveals that the Japanese version of the game has been pushed up to March 5. The game was originally scheduled for Japanese release on the 12th. This push forward is exclusively for Japan, the magazine says, so we're apparently going to have to wait until the 13th as scheduled. But at least we get to play it on Friday the 13th, which is scarier!

Don't be too bitter, though, English speaking zombie busters. Gamers in Japan are going to have to pay 8,800 yen for their version of the game. We're not sure of final US pricing, but it's probably not going to be $88 (this 8,800 yen figure is actually pretty common in Japan for high profile games like Dragon Quest and Metal Gear Solid).

The magazine also has first details on a limited edition version of the game. Set for release exclusively through Capcom's e-CAPCOM sales site, this version will include a 32-page all color art book, complete with exclusive staff commentary, a BSAA waist pouch that's meant to look like an item Chris wears in the game, and a 2 gigabyte USB memory card shaped like an anti virus item from the game. All this will ship in a deluxe box. Pricing is set at 12,800 yen.

This limited edition item is a Japan-only thing at the moment. We'll be sure and let you know if Capcom's international divisions have anything similar in store outside of RE's home country."

I'll post in your thread

I was playing co-op with my friend last night, and we were somehow able to beat the first stage of the demo. Kind of anti-climatic, since all we did was wait long enough for the chopper to come out. We didn't kill the axe-man.

However, we couldn't beat the second stage when the masked chainsaw guy comes out. I put 12 rifle rounds into his head and all I can get is for him to kneel. Fortunately you can just run past the zombies and easily avoid the chainsaw even when you run right next to him, but they eventually got us.

How do you do that stage?

Resident Evil 5 Update: New Boss, New Area, New Kinds of Pain
By Ricardo Torres, GameSpotPosted Dec 18, 2008 3:16 pm PT

Capcom shows off the anticipated survival horror game.

Capcom held an event this week to show off Resident Evil 5, the latest entry in the reborn survival horror franchise. Two areas inside the game were showcased, the first being the same basic demo we've seen over the past few months, which has morphed into the upcoming public demo. On the other hand, the second area featured never-before-seen areas and gameplay that hinted at what else the game is going to offer. More importantly, the new areas gave us a glimpse of cinematic sequences that offered some bits of information on the storyline. Given that we're gluttons for punishment and curious about the story, we dove right in to face any number of deaths in the promising game.

Sheva's got your back while you focus on more important things, like levers.

We started out with the boss-fight level taken from the game's second chapter, which pit lead character Chris Redfield and his partner Sheva against a mutated creature that was a cross between a bat and a scorpion. The battle took place in a rocky canyon that afforded some room to maneuver, and by "maneuver" we mean "run for our lives." Escape seemed to be the name of the game in the fight, given that Mr. Scorpion-Bat Hybrid is nimble and not entirely pleasant. The biggest issues to be dealt with are ground and air attacks because the critter likes to mix things up. We're at least grateful that it wasn't burrowing under the ground, which would have made things even trickier. Even so, the battle was fairly painful and lengthy, despite the fact that infinite-ammo cheats had been enabled. Thankfully, as with most things RE, a little patience and several million bullets usually do the trick. We're pretty sure there's a smarter way to kill the thing more quickly, hopefully using Sheva in some way. Although we're not knocking our helpful, life-restoring buddy, we will say that it would have been nice if she had done a bit more and gotten out from underfoot. Once the creature was killed, we were treated to a cinematic that gave an annoyingly simplified, albeit cool, impression of the fight. We would have liked to just take the thing out with one well-aimed pistol shot as Chris does in the cinematic, but that's not quite how things played out in the fight.

After that battle, we were able to check out part of a cinematic that segued into a battle with motorcycle-mounted majini (who aren't letting their virally infected state block them from enjoying all available options for chasing down Chris and Sheva) that had Chris manning a gun on the back of a moving jeep. Unfortunately, we got only a taste of that level before we had to jump to the next playable area from the game's second chapter. That level finds Chris and Sheva hot on the trail of the mysterious man named Irving. The search leads the duo to an area that's equal parts refinery and chemical plant, which, unsurprisingly, is crawling with majini. Although the stage featured the expected quota of shooting, dismemberment, and melee action, there was also some traditional RE puzzle-solving. Your path through the first part of the area is set outdoors and blocked by jets of flame, locked doors, and other obstacles, requiring you to hit switches and use zip lines to access different areas. Besides the puzzle elements and mobs of majini, we got to deal with several of what is currently in the running for most-hated enemy in RE5, the burlap-hooded chainsaw maniac. The tenacious foe requires multiple shots to the head, which can get dicey when he's advancing on you.

Once you make it past all of that, you'll meet up with Josh, one of the remaining survivors from a STARS team that's been thinned out after an encounter with majini. From a story standpoint, there seems to be some tension between Josh and Chris; Josh doesn't seem to be a fan of Chris' approach to recent events. Over the course of an intense conversation between the two, it's revealed that one of the reasons Chris is so driven to make his way through all the madness is to find a friend. Josh, on the other hand, is more than ready to get out of town. In any case, everyone's stuck with each other, and your group gains an additional member for the remainder of the level. This latter part of the level is set indoors, adding a claustrophobic vibe to the action, and has you working your way through building interiors, in some cases covering your party members as they hack a computer and open up a new path. The second part of the level does a good job of building dread, considering that you're not always able to see exactly what's coming due to the cramped quarters, although you can hear them good enough. This leads to some nice, albeit irritating moments when you hear and then see flashes of Mr. Chainsaw dutifully making his way to your group.

That burlap sack looks like it's on too tight.

The game plays much the same as it has the last few times we've tried it. If you're familiar with the handling of the GameCube version of RE4 then you should be right at home with RE5. Using Sheva effectively takes some getting used to, considering that she can be quite effective but does require some directing on your part. She can also be a liability because you basically have to drop everything and go help her when she's in trouble, seeing as how you'll fail the mission if she dies. As far as looks go, RE5 is shaping up nicely on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Overall, we like what we see and anxiously await the game's March 13th release. Look for more on the game in the coming months, and keep an eye out for the playable demo due out early next year.

I watched them play this on X-play the other day, I'll be honest, I wasn't that impressed.

The dude emptied like 5 assault rifle clips onto some skinny zombie with a chainsaw, and the zombie didn't even show any evidence that he was being hit, it was like the guy was firing blanks.

Is he invincible for the demo, or just invincible?

Invincible bad guys, especially when they are just normal sized dudes, really break my immersion.

Just the demo I'm pretty sure. However, in the demo you could shoot him in the head and he would react after a couple shots. I agree on the 'not reacting' thing though, pumping bandoleers of clips into some guy to kill him is really annoying.

what are you guys talking about?? To kill the chainsaw dude, just shoot him in the head a bunch. Also use those explosive barrels to your advantage.

Sheesh, I've beaten this stage 3 times already, it isn't that hard.

In this video at 20:12 he says that the chainsaw is 'pretty much' invulnerable, whatever that means, and this is the same demo (at last I think so) that was released in Japan.
