The quad-core Opteron, Barcelona, as well its desktop version Phenom certainly have been disappointments so far. Unless they blow the lid off the processor market by using unobtainium with exponentially smaller dies that run cooler, have more cores, and run at a higher clock speed all while not being crazy expensive, then they might have a chance.

i don't know...i thought part of the point of AMD purchasing ATI was to start producing quad-core units in which 2 or 3 of the cores were CPUs while the other 1 or 2 were actually GPUs, sort of how it was in the early days before dedicated graphics cards...processors are certainly capable of that now, as it is a VERY limited group of consumers that actually utilize consumer-level quad-core processors to their full potential

I don't believe Barcelona is that big a disappointment, if you're interested in 2 or more sockets, or clustering. HTX Infiniband kills pretty much everything as far as latency/bandwidth are concerned and is generally a bit cheaper for the performance it yields as well. Last I checked HyperTransport was also cleaning up NetBurst in most largely parallel benchmarks.
