Ok so my roommate and I found a kitten in the middle of the road in our apt complex around 11:45 this morning...she was very hot and couldnt move the lower half of her body. We took her to our apt and layed her infront of a fan and once she cooled off she started wobbly walking around. We took her to the vet and they say she is about 5 weeks old and 1.3 lbs. She is doing fine now...eating soft food and trying to drink. The thing is...the maintainance guys at the complex say that the mother may live around here...she is someones pet who got lost a while ago, apparently she has a few kittens...this one was about to die so we couldn't leave it out...now that she is doing better, should we let her go for her mom to find...or should we keep her and find a home for her...she keeps mewing like she is trying to find her mom...what to do!!? 6/4/2008 4:27:44 PM |

i would think it would be better that the thing goes back to its mother, though i do not know the best method to make that happen ( i dont know how cats are about accepting handled kittens)
but if the mother is owned by someone that is not your kitten its the owners
maybe at least you can ask them to consider that you rescued that kitten from the dead and that you would like to keep the kitten, but you gotta do the right thing and make an effort to return it to its mother and its owner 6/4/2008 4:34:45 PM |

i wouldn't stick it back outside. you can't be sure that it will find it's mom, or that the mom will accept it back. it could starve or die from the heat out there too. 6/4/2008 4:36:21 PM |

don't put her out.
the mother could be a stray and you could have potentially saved the little thing's life.
if it comes to it try and bottle feed her. really, really easy to do and you can get the supplies from wal mart. but 5 weeks is pretty old i think shed be fine.
but i wouldn't put her back out.
and also
wait are you sure the mother is the one that the guys were talking about. or is this what they think??

right...(in response to DNL's post)
You're getting it healthier, the back legs not working thing was exactly like my cat that my sister got out of the road and my mom nursed back to health. If you're going to keep caring for it it would be best to get a bottle and kitten milk formula. Its probably too young for soft foods depending on the size of the cat.
Also, if it was found in the middle of the road then its VERY likely that the mom was carrying it across the street when the mom was hit by a car. That's what happened to our cat.
Edit: That cat looks old enough to eat normally...maybe?

do you KNOW that it's the mother? (im more curious now)
because, it is kitten season. very easily could have been a stray's.
someone brought in 3 seperate litters of kittens at the animal shelter a few weeks ago. all on the same road 6/4/2008 4:44:09 PM |

im not positive if it is or not..i have never seen her. But there was another kitten running around the complex but it was fatter than my little one...so I'm almost positive she is a stray's kitten...she is too young for shots, am i gonna get rabies!! 6/4/2008 4:45:46 PM |

don't let her outside, get her healthy, socialize her and get her to a rescue group or a shelter (or try to hawk her on tww). Mom is most likely a stray, tell a rescue group about the mom maybe they can catch her a spay her, then let her back out. 6/4/2008 5:14:21 PM |
