Ok i'm serious. No fillet de ferret. I'm getting the husky once i get a yard, but in the mean time these are great pets for apartments. They're descended, fixed, never bitten, litterbox trained, do tricks, sleep 18+hours/day and chase my roommates cats around the apartment and do choreographed fight routines.

2 on the outside are mine.

Calvin will do anything for yuengling or guinness.

I think they're awesome because they're in the wolverine/badger/otter family and are used to hunt big rabbits in australia and eat prairie dogs in the west. Anyone have ferret pics?

2 of mine, and 2 of my friends. They aren't that hyper in that video.

Random video. When you see them going crazy and just jumping/flopping all over the place that is the ferret war dance. They just run into things and it looks so funny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thazJICAsps&feature=related
They stick out thier tongues sometimes when they sleep. It's hilarious.

Really cute babies.

They will continuously yawn when they wake up.

best ferret versus cat video. Ferrets just don't leave cats alone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0DCPK5SbwM
they aren't really scared of anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXUr-wM40ZE
i don't see how someone would have this much time, but you can teach them a bunch of tricks.

^the descented ones actually don't. As long as you give them baths every couple weeks they smell a lot less than cats or dogs.

^what kinda dog? You'd be surprized. Ferrets get along with almost any animal. You just have to slowly introduce them, and then they actually will play a bunch. My ferrets have had hours of fun with a golden retriever. As long as the dog is well-behaved it'll know better and not hurt the ferret just like it wouldn't bite a human.

smaller dog:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paVzqGqPj5c

bigger dog:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3oH3TCG23E

It seems like dogs love playing with them.

they will catch rodents and eat them though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMe3jjJuOmQ&feature=related

In australia they call rabbit hunting with ferrets "ferreting" because they have tracking collars on the ferrets and they let them loose in a field and the ferrets find the rabbit holes and drag the rabbits out, sometimes breaking thier necks. There's some youtube videos on ferreting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZrYlZyWDuw
I just picked one at random, but go to about 3:20 into the video and you'll see how vicious they can be.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsSVcqWZpHE&feature=related
holy shit i want a Siberian weasel. That's how my ferrets play. They'll fight really rough and people who first see it think they're actually fighting but it's playing. They love to grab each other by the neck and play mercy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKADopH3qFY&feature=related
Kinda like our cats. They just don't them the cats alone.

The cats LOVE the ferrets. Whenever i have the ferrets out they come scratching on the door wanting to play. The ferrets usually outlast the cats though and the cats go pass out somewhere.

and they loooooove hammocks. I think i have like 5-6 different hammocks in thier big cage. My friend was studying abroad in London for the summer, so this past semester i actually had 4.

One of the saddest days in my life is when I had to put my ferret down, and then held her dead body before the vet took her away.
And was watching as the vet missed her hart three times before he finally found it for the injection. She was out cold from the gas, but still sucked.

Do ferrets usually stink to y'all? I know they have that scent thing that is supposed to be removed, but all the ones I've ever been around stunk.

^^^jeez. tumor or something?

^here's my thoughts on the matter. They have thier scent glands removed (if you've ever smelled a non-descented ferret they smell like amonia) so they don't smell all that much. Most people keep them in small cages so imagine a cat or dog in a small space for a very long time. Dog/cat pillows and cages usually smell too. As long as you give ferrets a bath every couple weeks or so they don't smell that much.

In fact i would say they don't really smell at all up to a week after they get a bath. It's just people who don't bath thier ferrets that have smelly ferrets. I mean think of a person who hasn't bathed in 2 weeks. Much more smelly. People think animals are smelly because we bath every single day (or most of us) but if you bathed a pet (dog/cat/ferret) every day they would be a lot less smelly and dirty than a human because we are exposed to a much more diverse environment everywhere we go, whereas pets usually stay in one place.

Another issue is the litterbox. Most people have a ferret litter box in the cage and not covered and this can add to the smell. Imagine if you had a cat/dog litter box sitting in the open. You wouldn't be able to go in the room after a while. So in conclusion as long as you give them baths every few weeks, clean thier litter box, and wash thier hammocks/towels than smell really isn't a problem at all. It's just some people are lazy. If you were to handle my ferrets you wouldn't really smell them at all.

Well they would smell like cucumber melon shampoo:

loved wasting time playing with the ferrets when i ran a pet store, always taught them to jump out of the cage at you when you opened it. spunky lil critters. i would never be able to tolerate the stink of ferret shit or the constant cleanup. fun as hell, but too much upkeep.

WOW. So, I have had ferrets in the past and find just the opposite to be true and so does most of the literature out there that isn't put out there by companies trying to sell you products to "de-stink" your ferret.

You should not bathe your ferret more than once a month. Bathing a ferret to reduce their odor is a common mistake than many people make. Giving them a bath will temporarily solve the problem, but makes the smell worse in the long run. When you bathe your ferret, you actually strip their fur of its natural oil and send this oil production into overdrive, making your ferret's odor even stronger. The more often that you bathe them, the worse the smell often gets.

Ferrets just have a natural musky scent. The smell really isn't that bad as long as you keep their bedding and cage clean. The strongest smell usually isn't from the animal, but from their bedding and toys because the ferret is constantly rubbing its scent all over it.

I actually got my first ferret from bottombaby I now have 3 of them and love them dearly! I had up to 5 at one time, but 2 passed due to old age (I adopted them when they were 8 years old). Now I have my Isaac, Frodo, and Snowball.

*note - the kitty is declawed, shes not hurting the baby! and trust me, he gets her back, he loves to bite her *

More can by seen on my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/threewingedfury or http://community.webshots.com/album/563415839hnhpOD?vhost=community

Also on their smell, mine don't smell too bad. I don't bathe them often either, it ruins their skin. When I do bathe them, I use baby shampoo and the cucumber melon shampoo back to back. I also use dry shampoo and deodorizing spray. I also use Bi-Odor which is $30 for a 32oz bottle and I put it in their water, the poo doesn't smell as bad. Sometimes you can tell if you don't change the litter box, but like I said, I had 5 at one time and it wasn't that bad at all. My ferrets are beyond spoiled. I shop ferret.com WEEKLY.

^^I see you are an astute pupil of Dr. Christopher Mayhorn.

Yes inquiring as to the specific location of the said contact lense, I pondered, perhaps my ferret relocated the lense. Placing myself in the perspective of the ferret, or ferritcus hypothalamus, I realized my ferret would hide the lenses in the bathroom, in an attempt to cause the most distress to its master.

I'm kinda addicted to reading about animals online so before i got ferrets i read anything i could find on them. Although that is the common opinion it varies from ferret to ferret. You obviously shouldn't bath them weekly but after a year or two of trial and error i found the most efficient bathing schedule is about every 2.5-3 weeks. Some larger ferrets do better with every 5-6 weeks but after getting everyones opinion on the smell factor i think 3 weeks is the best. But yeah i don't really mind the musky scent, and from what i've found it takes them about 3 weeks to redevelope that smell and then i give them a bath and it goes away. To test this i didn't bath them for a few months and the smell didn't get worse, so i determined they reached thier maximum "smellyness" by about 3 weeks so that's when i gave them a bath. Sometimes i stretch it out to a month.

In reality the whole striping the oil from the fur idea applies to most mammels. If you don't shampoo a humans hair for a week or so it gets really oily because the body is overcompensating because it's used to the natural oil being washed out by the everyday shampooing process. If anyone has been on a long camping trip or haven't showered w/ shampoo for a period of 1.5-2 weeks or longer you notice your hair goes back to its normal consistancy because it's reached equilibrium again. The reason everyone says "don't bath your ferret" is because they're small and they do tend to produce more oil than your typical mammel but all animals produce this oil and bathing will in no way harm thier skin.

Agree but do what works for you.

I have 2 ferrets - "Jack & Stitch" both 3-4 yr old males. rescues.
I wash my ferrets towels and hammocks more often than I bathe my ferrets. My ferrets only get baths every 2-3 months. I used the ferret shampoo or baby shampoo. I just clean the litter box out every day or 2 ( I used the papurr cat litter (recycled newspaper).
Mine get along great with my dogs. Their cage is in the dogs room during school breaks. (they stay in my classroom during the year).

annoying pets. ive lived with people that had them and known several people to have them. Even when bathed regularly they smell terrible and the smell permeates throughout the place you live. On top of that, Ive found no redeeming quality to warrant keeping them around as a "pet" but maybe thats just me.

^you must have had a bad experience because no one really mentions the smell when they're in my room. As long as you keep the cage clean and clean the litter box it's not really an issue. You might have run into some non-descented ferrets. My cousin used to have 2 regular ferrets and the room smelled of urine.

lol i don't see how you think a chinchilla (which is a rodent) is cooler than a ferret (wolverine family, and much smarter). Rodents are dumb and poop everywhere. Ferrets can do tricks and are litter trained.

The lady i bought my albino ferret from in charlotte said she used to work at a Petsmart back when they had ferrets and somehow the partition between the ferret and chinchilla cage broke and the next morning they had security video footage of the ferret gutting the chinchilla live.
