Any opinions on this place. It says that the student fee is 30 with a cart. Is it worth it or should I just go to RGA this afternoon.

Eagle Ridge is top quality for this area. Eagle Ridge has nice greens and forces you to make demanding links style shots on just about every hole. $30 is a steal for this course.

RGA is a crap hole of a dog track. There is not one hole where you can hit a driver. The fairways are crab grass, and there is no driving range.

crooked creek is another one close by (20 minutes maybe from campus down lake wheeler)

$30 for students, pretty fun course. usually in good condition.

RGA is too old and too short to enjoy a round imo. They do okay with what they have but Eagle Ridge is much better and I think 30 bux is the same price as RGA's student rate with a cart. They also have GPS in the carts at Eagle Ridge which is a useful at times.

Crooked creek isn't bad either but my preference is still Eagle Ridge. Falls Village is another good choice. RGA is usually at the bottom of my list.

I've played crooked creek and liked it, one of the 9s was really hard though, felt like I was in the mountains.

I'll have to check out Eagle Ridge today, anyone up for a round?

they need to shut it down for a few years and resod the fairways and greens.

lol I usually hate it because I have to dress uberfratty and get stuck behind slow old businessmen. But it's free and good if I can't find a partner because my gf likes to drive the cart

I think Eagle Ridge is actually $35 with a student ID but still WELL worth the money. The course is always in awesome condition and the GPS on the carts is huge. Just make sure your gps works before you take off.

my first birdie ever at any regular course was on 18

driver to the right end of the fairway (tried to stay away from the water on the left)
5-iron across the water
~20-30 ft putt for the birdie

^^wildwood doesn't have GPS this year. I played there back in early may and no gps on the carts.

Yeah, I've played wildwood about 4 times this year and no GPS on any of the carts.

I wondered the same thing about Wildwood. They told me that people were stealing the GPS's off the carts, and that's why they did away with them. Stupid thieves. I like those too, they had the little LED readout of the distance to the center of green on the back of the carts too.

i enjoyed eagle ridge the one time I played it, the topography made it an interesting course, tests your skills at judging distance with changes in elevation. The gps comes in handy for that.

I ended up playing with some guy that knew a lot about the course and tried to give me swing tips all the time which is annoying, but he wasn't a dick about it. Good times were had by all.

I love it when i'm in my practice swing on the first tee and someone gives me swing tips blah blah, and then i bomb the shit about 300 yards.

but seriously, I need to find some new golfing buddies for the weekends, all mine are either back home for the summer or suck so bad that it's not worth it... not saying i'm great, I shot a mid 80 at RGA the other day on a pretty rough day... i'd just rather not play a round with people that take about 5 hours.

^I wish I could shoot like that. I can't break 100. I shoot about 127 at Eagle Ridge and get lots of double bogey's.

I'd say I was average, but I don't take 5 hours. Probably 4. Golf isn't supposed to be quick. I feel like I play too fast sometimes. I can only go as fast as the group in front of me.

^^ I get in a rythm when i'm playing golf and if i'm in a cart it usually takes about 3 hours if no one is in front of me, maybe 3.5 if their are.

^ I love going to knights play though because i'm walking anyway usually and I don't rush whoever i'm with as much because there is always someone in front of you anyway. I'd be down to go just about any night. Probably head to the range there at least tonight.

^^We need to go some weekend then. This is the best time of the year because it stays at about 70 to 80 degrees after the sun goes down. That is perfect weather for golf.

1. Eagle Ridge is not harder than Crooked Creek.
2. RGA has gotten a lot better manicure wise in the past few yrs, the fairways are not crab grass.
3. Wildweed Green. Crap.
4. Eagle Ridge has serious course management problems.
5. Crooked Creek is the best bet in the area.

I hate to agree, but Wildwood is crap now. 5 or so years ago, when they seemed to give a shit about the upkeep, I loved playing there. I'm sure it helped that I was a member, but still...

The layout is pretty good, especially the back 9. It's a pretty tight course, so accurate tee shots are a must, and the greens are interesting enough. But DAMN if they haven't let the conditions turn to shit.

im goin to crooked creek for my first time ever playing an actual golf course with my roomate sometime soon. I've played par 3 prolly around 10 times, but never an actual golf course. Should be interesting........

It's a matter of opinion. Crooked Creek is only about 6300 yards from the tips but does have a high slope rating. IMO, Eagle Ridge is a better test of golf. 6900 yards and last time I was there the greens were running real quick. From what I remember, Crooked Creek is more of a placement course which can make it harder for some.

^^ just make sure you spend alot of time judging distances and you'll be ok, very few of the holes make you put your driver in the bag.

^^^Crooked Creek is a target course. Eagle Ridge is a power course where even the best golfers can pull out their biggest and hit the ball as far as they can.

I suck, but the best way to get started would be to play Par 3, then Knights Play, then Pine Hollow, and then Eagle Ridge, or Crooked Creek. Pine Hollow is another local course that isn't all that hard if you are a beginner.

i'd love to get back out and play more often. I was shooting like 85-90 a couple years ago but its been a long time.

i've played knights play about 5 times prolly. Played nine tonight and played the best i've ever played. I hit 5 greens and was usually, if not always on the green in 2. My putting was quite terrible though, i may add.

I look forward to playing an actual course though. My roommate has been playing since he was like 10 and used to have a guy that made a few PGA tour tournaments as his instructor/wwhatever....so he helps me out alot when it comes to which club i should use, etc etc. I'm kinda new to golf, but i like it....its quite addicting

it's tough to putt at knight's play anyway, the greens aren't exactly high quality, as well as the fact that there are steep changes in elevation down with no apparent run-off (PRT guys correct me if i'm wrong) and they're never consistently fast or slow from green to green.

^^If you are still in college somewhere make sure to take the golf PE class. It helped me a lot when I took it at Wake Tech. I never really play so I am terrible, but at least I can chip pretty good and hit the green from about 120 yards away.

Eagle Ridge has a great layout but the course is not taken care of properly, which is why they have 2 temporary holes out there on the front 9 as of last week. If they put more money into the course they could have one of the better public courses in this area.
