you're somewhere in public and someone asks you for directions, then as you're trying to tell them some rude, inconsiderate, know it all butts and tells them the "real" directions

then the person that asked you thanks that asshole and walks away.

this happens to me like on a weekly basis

My mom gives the worst directions.

Mom: "Well, you drive down so and so road and you'll see a McDonald's. Keep driving past the McDonald's..."

Me: "Wait, so the McDonald's has absolutely no bearing on where I'm trying to go?"

Mom: "No, I guess not."

Me: "Well then why did you tell me?"

Mom: "Stop interrupting me and let me finish giving you the directions."

Me: *facepalm*

I'm terrible at giving directions

Any time someone flies in and tries to find out office, I get them lost as fuck, every time

How are people bad at giving directions?

If you know how to get there, tell them a landmark where they have to turn.

Tell them direction of turn.

Repeat until destination is reached.

There's no need to be a woman about this.

My father tends to be vague about certain turns or points on the way to the destination but goes overboard with all the various landmarks if you've 'gone too far.'

I tend to give too complex of directions, especially if the location is too far or they need to take lots of different roads. A few usually start to get glassy-eyed [no joenumbers] and retarded-looking after 5 seconds of comprehension. They start doing that, it means they're gonna ask someone else down the street so I'll just tell them it's a few blocks -----------------------> that way.

^^for people who just pull up in a vehicle and ask, who aren't writing anything down, they tend not to listen or remember well. Which is usually why they're asking in the first place.

Any time one of these overzealous assholes butts in to supply their two cents, I seize the opportunity to bail on the conversation and go on about my business

i actually stared him down afterwards and there was awkward silence after that.

thats funny, but i do that to, just because people get nervous when they dont get to the place quickly, they need moral boosts along the way

If I'm giving directions and they have to be on a road for an extended period of time I usually try to tell them about how far it will be and not throw in random stuff on the side of the road because that confuses more than helps I think.

i would rather have someone tell me to pass the mcdonalds and if you get to the railroad tracks you've gone too far, than to hear, "go about 500 yards" i don't know how far 500 yards is... shit.

Well if it's only 500 yards then I wouldn't ever say that. I would say, "turn at the Cookout" and that would be sufficient information. If they have to drive on a road for a little while though I would say, "you'll drive down this road for several miles," simply to let them know their turn is not immediate.

I don't know if I'd call giving someone directions a 'moment to shine,' but half of the time you end up repeating yourself three different times anyway. I'd just as soon pass this opportunity of to someone like yourself, someone with a bit more enthusiasm.

My favorite line is, "Sorry I'm not from around here"

Seriously though if the directions are quick and simple, I'm more than happy to help; I'm just not a fan of breaking down 5 minute directions for someone too lazy to use Mapquest

^^^ that picture is HUGE. i would like one, but i want a nice one, and i can't justify spending that much money on myself right now. so, i'll stick with, "drive past the mcdonalds, and turn at the cookout. if you cross the railroad tracks, you've gone too far." haha
