who do y'all go to for the dentist? i haven't been in YEARS, but apparently my ONE filling came out, and now i have a hole in my tooth and it's sore...i need to make an appointment ASAP, and i'd prefer to have recommendations from strangers than randomly picking one out of the phone book 6/17/2008 6:44:41 PM |

I liked my experience with Sunrise Dental. They have a location in Raleigh & Chapel Hill. I've only been to the Chapel Hill location. But they've done my cleanings for a while and removed my wisdom teeth. In their tv commercial they mentioned they are comfortable giving sedatives for people going to the dentist. I'm not nervous going, but if they'll sedate you for a regular visit, I figured they would be shy about sedation/anesthesia for wisdom teeth removal which is what got me started going to the dentist regularly again.

I know who I can't recommend. The dentist on Lynn Road near the Raleigh Grande theater. I don't remember the name of the dentist there now, the old dentist retired. Anyway, she royally screwed up some fillings of mine. I had to get her fix the same filling three times and I still think it might be messed up but now I'm overseas so there's not a whole lot I can do about it. 6/17/2008 7:18:25 PM |

if you're in japan, why not get a dentist there to work on you? there are many fluent english speaking dentists there and they probably have better training. as for price, most likely cheaper too.6/17/2008 8:52:16 PM |

^ Have you seen their teeth here?
Seriously though, a dentist will only work on you here in 15 minute increments because of how the insurance billing works. My friend had to go to the dentist for 5 appointments to get one filling done. And yes, she was left with a gaping hole in her tooth until it was completed. One of my boyfriend's students had been going to the dentist every Saturday since FEBRUARY to get a crown done and it's still not finished 6/17/2008 10:17:45 PM |

^^ Dr. Naran over-analyzed my teeth and wanted about $2k in work done on tiny imperfections he thought were developing into cavities. I went back to my old dentist back home for a second opinion, and he saw nothing to be concerned about.
I didn't go back to Dr. Naran.
Of course, now I live in Durham and need another dentist. 6/17/2008 11:45:58 PM |

that's what he does. he preys on the gullible to earn more than his fair share. it's despicable. i went there for a cleaning and i got the same estimate. he even said my retainer was placed wrong and that it was going to cause some weird problem later. not the most intelligent individual. i would not go there.6/18/2008 10:16:26 AM |

Apparently too late to help you, but I go to Dr. Patrick Roberson over on St. Mary's street, across from Broughton High School. Don't have a whole lot of experience yet (I've only seen him twice, he recently bought the practice from Dr. Howard Shareff, who was retiring) but I like him so far. Plus he's an NCSU grad.

it wasn't actually a filling that fell out, but a small piece of enamel that came off that was next to the filling (where the original cavity was)...it cost $138 out the door (no insurance) for the amalgam filling ($184 for composite)...that video above makes me wish i had gotten composite for the extra ~$50, though

Yup, we are about the only developed country in the world that still uses amalgam. I've got 3 of them I want removed. In other countries they have done studies that show that removing amalgams helps with a couple of chronic diseases, but here in the US we like to stick our head in the sand thanks to the retarded ADA. 6/26/2008 9:13:00 AM |

since this is just an informative thread i thought i'd throw in some greensboro suggestions
especially for people who are pain sensitive or freaked by the dentist. my old painkiller habit makes it so i choose to not take them anymore, so good doctors are important... cause if it hurts, i "cant" take percocet
anyways... for checkups and cleanings and minor stuff like a cavity i would go to dr roe on church street. http://www.wellness.com/dir/2252249/dentist/nc/greensboro/roe-ronald-g-dds
for the painful stuff like root canals and wisdom teeth and the surgery type stuff, i'd go to dr riggs. if you're scared of the dentist like me, this place is perfect. i have an INSANELY irrational fear of the dentist, plus the aforementioned inability to take pain meds... so when i went in and saw all the instruments, i made them put me under immediately
i got my wisdom teeth out almost 10 years late, so i was in pretty severe pain by the time i finally went. and by the time the sedative wore off that night, it didn't hurt enough to even wish i could take pain meds. he rocks.

DONN B. FREEMAN, DDS FAMILY DENTISTRY 3518 Wade Avenue Raleigh, NC 27607
FOR APPOINTMENTS CALL: (919) 832-6665
My family's been going to Dr. Freeman's for years (me, since I've had teeth) and I've sent all my friends to him.
Last year I chipped my front tooth eating a fork and he worked me in and filed it down free of charge. Regular cleanings + checkup are around $120, every 6 to 9 months as you need them. 2/4/2009 9:21:06 PM |

This is really funny...I know her, but haven't seen her in YEARS. And she's really cool. I would definitely recommend her just based on her awesome personality and her smarts (she's definitely very into what she does). I met her right after she moved to NC from Brewerton, NY, and we used to hang out quite a bit (like about 15 years ago) before she went to dental school. A girl you could easily have a crush on, lol.
I might have to make an appointment there. I got a hole in a molar you could drive a Peterbuilt 379 through...and that bitch hurts like crazy sometimes.

I was NOT impressed with Sunrise. My better half has been going there for a couple of years, and she likes them. But I was NOT impressed by their lack of thoroughness when checking my teeth out. There's that one molar that I've already mentioned, and you couldn't miss that unless you were blind in one eye and couldn't see out of the other. The molar immediately adjacent to it has a cavity (albeit very small, but very obvious) that they didn't even bother to look at at all. And I have an incisor with a hairline crack in it. You look fairly closely, you can see it. They didn't see or say a damn thing about it...or even bother to look at any of my other teeth in the least. They were too busy trying to nail me into having a root canal done (at a total cost to me of about $2300) on that one tooth...and there really wasn't much if any pain except for hypersensitivity. I didn't have the cash, and I'm already extended to the max on credit, so I sure as hell couldn't afford to have it done at the time. What got me was this: ALL THEY LOOKED AT WAS THE TWO FUCKING XRAYS THEY TOOK. No scaling, no probing, not even a good close look at the cavity. I was out 115 bucks for 30 minutes of my time with not much more information than when I went in...now, two months later, there's pain that's intense every now and then when I eat certain things, but no signs of abscess and a lot of the time there's NO pain.
Screw them. I ain't going back. I'll get some dental grade UV cure adhesive and a Dremel tool and do the shit myself.
