Greetings

I am Brad, I will be moving to NC from California to work at GSK and continue my education at NCSU. I need to find an apartment near the company in RTP area from August to December. I searched online for apartments near the company and most of the apartments have bad ratings on apartment rating website. Can some of you guys from Raleigh area suggest any decent priced apartment which are not known for screwing over people. I have my own furniture so unfurnished apt is perfectly fine if it makes it any cheaper. Apt needs to be away from any ghetto area. I need it approximately 1 to 7 miles away from the company. i wouldnt judge by apartment ratings, most people will give a place a zero for one measley complaint

just go look at the places you think fit into your price range

theres not much trouble in RTP and there aint no ghetto area in RTP...i work at Syngenta btw which is down cornwallis from yall, grats on getting the job


yea briar creek or near NC 54/55 area....also Woodcroft area near southpoint is where most RTP employees live there are apartments and townhomes and is a very nice area near commerce

living right in RTP means you will have to drive to get to anywhere you wanna go to since RTP shuts down ~9pm and there isnt much in the way of stores or shopping just fast food joints

i just drive from raleigh everyday to get to work which is about a 10 minute drive so im not familiar with RTP area apts

just a general observation, you should always rent unfurnished. especially if you have furnishings.

i would suggest that you rent somewhere in west raleigh, your commute to RTP won't be too bad, and you'll be closer to NCSU and activities. Raleigh doesnt have much culture/nightlife (compared to california) but its a helluva lot better than RTP. RTP has nothing other than hotels and gas stations.

i would also suggest that you not live in Cary or Apex or Morrisville. these places are all yuppie suburban whitebread vanilla hell, with a few redneck trailerpark holdouts.

I would suggest that you look into places near NCSU. either renting a house or apartment. the general area between Dixie Trail (west), Oberlin Road (east) Wade Ave (north) and Hillsborough Street (south) is generally pretty nice. although right along Hillsborough St border might be a tad slummy in some spots. from that general area you can walk to NCSU in about 5 or 10 mins, and easy commute to RTP.

the last place i lived before movign to west coast was Spanish Trace Apts., right near Dixie Trail and Wade Ave. reasonable price, quiet. very convenient location. its been about 5 years, but i imagine it's about the same still

I prefer a place near RTP instead of NCSU because I have to be at work around 5 am in morning on some days. Also, I m not a big fan of night life or young college kids acting like 3rd graders every Tue and Thursday night. I have been there done that now it's serious business.

Ok, so if you're looking to avoid the ghetto, disregard suggestions for most apartments near NCSU as they're going to be filled with students (and while students are better than sketchy ass criminals, it'll still probably not be what you're looking for). If it needs to be away from any ghetto area, well, you're going to have a problem staying right around NCSU in Raleigh. Northwest Raleigh is a decent place to look for sure.

It would help if you posted a rent range that you're looking to stay in and what size apartment you're looking for (square footage or # of bedrooms).

Looking at a map, and considering you're going to NCSU and that you want to live within 7 miles of work, you're pretty much looking at apartments in Morrisville, NC or in the far northern reaches of Cary. I really suggest you use Rent.com in conjunction with ApartmentRatings.com to get an idea of what some apartment complexes are like in the area. Most of the stuff in Morrisville is the aforementioned bland, corporate, totally boring apartment complex kind of stuff. Still, if you want a quiet non-ghetto place to live it isn't a bad area in Morrisville. I-40 gives you a quick way to get to all the cool stuff in Durham or Raleigh so (unless you hate driving) it's a pretty sweet deal.

Also, as far as prices go in that area, you're probably looking at $680-800 for a 1 bedroom apartment of a varying configuration in one of the newer apartment complexes. If you head more towards Raleigh that price should come down a bit, but again 7 miles gives you some options just northeast of the airport in northwest Raleigh or lands you in northern Cary or Morrisville.

Haha, I agree, and I definitely have to say stay the hell away from NCSU then, you have the right idea already.

I'm also going to second the comments about Cary not being THAT white bread. Granted, Cary doesn't have really cool bars to go hang out at that don't have cheap beer and a college crowd. You will find some places to hang out though as there are shit tons of restaurants in Cary (if you're looking for a place to shoot the breeze with coworkers or something after work). Cary's also really damn safe and a pretty nice place to live (and it's even bike friendly as the newer neighborhoods have bike lanes and/or paths, if you want to bike to work). Traffic will be a little iffy during rush hours, but since you're going to work at 5am I think you'll be just fine. Find a place within a few miles of I-40 and you'll have great access to stuff in Durham or Raleigh. Anywhere in Cary or Morrisville will likely not be ghetto unless it's an older apartment complex (and then it's not ghetto, it's just families with less money than everybody else).

Good luck finding a place. I'd suggest some but I don't have the money to live in an area like that yet, so I only know of a few places around here. I do have family that lives in The Crosstimbers and they say it's really quite nice. Mostly families and professionals living there I think.

The apartments are all spread out and it's right about 7 miles from where you're working (I think, looking at google maps). Shouldn't be your first place to look but I can tell you if you like the look of it that it's not a bad place at all.

Well rent I would like to pay is in ranges of $300 - $450 plus electricity. I really don't care about the size of the room so if I can find a safe decent place for cheaper than four or five hundred I will live there. Also, I have 2 mattresses so I don't need any bed or tables that some apartments offer and charge hundreds extra.

I will be working 5 days and I have labs only once a week on campus. I need an apartment most closest to the GSK but not going over $450 or $500. Also, we all know about the high gas price so please keep in mind when suggesting if it will equal out. If I find a cheaper apt further than commute might cost more.

the area i talked about -- wade ave, dixie, etc... has a lot of families and professionals. it is quiet.

closer to hillsborough, okay, not so much. but west raleigh is pretty nice.

at 25 years old, you damn sure shouldnt be ready to move into the old-folks home to die. RTP is cultural death. if that's what you really want, then fine. but im telling you, you move to some little condo community in RTP or Morrisville, you're going to quickly be thinking "god DAMN this sucks!"

and at 5 am, i'll tell you, it will take you 15 minutes to drive from west raleigh/wade avenue, to cornwallis road. a little bit of a morning drive is nothing, compared to the fact that you'll have things to do nearby, and options for shopping and eating and entertainment... its totally worth it.


EDIT: 300-400? for rent??? are you planning on having 2 or 3 roommates splitting the bill with you? well you damn sure arent goign to find anything like that in RTP or Morrisville or Cary. you MIGHT find something for 600 in west raliegh.

So you're looking for a roommate then? 1 bedroom apartments start around 650 and go up to 850 in the Morrisville/Cary area if it's anywhere newer.

You will find no apartments for $500 up by that area I'm afraid. At least nowhere you'd want to stay. :/ Hell, $500 isn't a bad price for a 1 bedroom apartment near NCSU. You're really going to need to start looking on Craigslist (at http://raleigh.craigslist.org in the roomies section) for somebody who needs a roommate. Look for the key words like "professionals only" or something like that. There's plenty of other people like you who live near RTP who just want a roommate who isn't crazy/a noisy student.

^^ Maybe he can live somewhere quiet and drive to the fun places when he wants to go have fun? Living in a quiet part of town isn't an immediate death sentence for your social life.

Oh... man that really sucks. I REALLY have to suggest that you find a roommate then. Your total utilities each month between two people will be about $80-120/mo including cable, electricity, water, internet, and rent will probably be about $350-450 between two people. Really, start looking at craigslist unless you want a Raleigh apartment near NCSU (which is where the more affordable and not entirely shitty places to live are found).

If you do decide you can not (absolutely can not) live with anyone else, I think Ivy Commons (just south of NCSU, way far away from your workplace but not too far away if you take I-40, as the roads will be quiet at 5am) rents just under $500/mo and when I stayed there it was a very nice and quiet place. Lots of grad students there and not hardly any parties (one apartment would have parties occasionally every now and then but nothing serious).

I gotta say though you're really going to be toughing it out getting by with just student aid with an unpaid internship. Start hunting for a roommate or your financial life is going to be hell.

You need to start hunting for stuff like that, friend.

Put up an ad on there saying you need a place to say, $350-450/mo in rent with no more than $500/mo total combined including utilities (take whatever your max is and subtract $50 from it just because you should have some comfort room in your budget just in case gas prices go up to $6 or something and you still have to commute), say you're a grad student and you want a professional roommate and you need a place in a quiet, safe neighborhood in a nice part of town.

That's the nicest way to get across everything it seems like you want, plus people will be more likely to lease to you since you are a grad student with a professional intern job at GSK!

Yeah you're gonna have a hard time finding a non-sketch neighborhood, lol. $450-500 WOULD pay for half the rent in a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a professional apartment complex. The only problem is you have to find somebody willing to sign the lease with you. So put an ad out there and start finding people who want to find a professional to room with in Cary or Morrisville (or northwest raleigh, you will need to double your maximum range to about 14 miles if you want a decent shot at finding an apartment).

You've got options, but you need to start jumping on these posted ads. Any deals like that in a non-crappy neighborhood will get snatched up immediately.

I found my current roommate on TWW and the dude is normal. He's just as crazy as I am, but loves guns like 8x as much as I do. There's usually somebody lurking who might check the classifieds for a roommate like you. Find somebody interested then find an apartment that'll take your credit.

I really think that tiny little place for $315/mo looked ideal. Looks like a nerdy person lives there (based on the computer-centric room layout) and it's CLOSE to your work and it's close to some highways that'll get you to work and school with a quickness. You will be paying some money in gas though, so I hope you have a gas-efficient car or motorcycle. I'd send out an email to that person with that $315/mo place immediately and call them on the phone tomorrow to see if it's still available and what the neighborhood is like (it's always good to ask).

Scrimp for now and save up that extra for emergencies. If you're living entirely off of financial aid you will be fucked if anything goes wrong.

Oh shit. Sell the benz, buy a toyota corolla. Pocket the money and dump it in a savings account so you won't have any trouble on NCSU's campus. If you're going to be commuting that much and going to NCSU for graduate school at the same time you don't want anything to do with a fancy ass luxury car on NCSU's campus. Not only will people be dinging it with their doors (in the parking decks), but people break into cars all the time in the parking decks on campus. If you're going to be a student for at least a year and a half I'd strongly recommend you consider swapping down to a cheaper car just so it doesn't stick out in the parking deck.

Basic transportation is basic transportation. I hate tiny ass cars like anybody else but I'd drive one if the financial need was there (and from the sounds of it you should be scrimping in any way possible).

Guys I was just throwing a range out there because someone said rents in NC are cheap. I am willing to take some more money from my pocket if I like the place but I haven't really looked at any apts physically. Currently I am trying to make a list so when I come to NC I can look at the certain apts which are decent. Also, I only need to go to NCSU for one lab and rest of my classes are online. But I will write back again in a few days after I look up some apts online to get opinions. Thanks.
