I've loved George ever since middle school. One of my senior quotes was "I can't follow the logic in that at all!"

RIP, George. You will be missed.

Decades ago, Carlin used to be funny and thought-provoking. In recent years, his nihilistic commentary has not only not been funny, a lot of it has been down right disturbing.

Quote :
"No need for grandiose outrage here. [Carlin's] been saying stuff like this for decades. In fact it's a core part of his act, which is why he's allowed to skate. I offer the clip not as fodder for indignation but because it's a nice little window into Carlin's persona: the bitter hippie, broken-hearted by the failure of the 60s, whose idealism has since decayed into a cynicism so black and weary that revanchist, schadenfreudean sentiments like this now escape his lips without the slightest stutter. And of course it's all paired with the most touchy feely, cringemaking New Age back-to-the-land nonsense about being 'in balance with nature' the way the Indians are. Thus the paradox of the malignant self-styled humanist: We need to join hands and tap into the spiritual creatures within — and if we don't, then he hopes your house burns down."

I once saw Carlin on the old Imus show and he expressed hope that our planet would be hit by an asteroid and all of us killed. In case you're wondering, he wasn't joking.

He did the narration on some Thomas The Tank Engine episodes. I always assumed it was part of some court mandated community service.

He was Mr. Conductor on Shining Time Station for a long time. When I was a kid i saw him do some Thomas the Tank Engine tour or some shit. Was pretty amusing when I got older and saw his standup and realized that THAT guy was Mr. Conductor. My favorite comedian, and a personal hero.

One of the best ever.

Playboy interview with him a couple years ago really revealed him as a guy who had a lot of serious problems in his personal and professional lives, but even in his stretch toward irrelevance and crank-old-man status the last little while, he has mattered.

(I mean, we got 30+ years out of him, that's more than most entertainers can offer)

I don't let celebrity deaths get to me, but when I sat down at work and saw my Rufus (from Bill & Ted) action figure next to the monitor, I actually got pretty upset.

When my son was around 2 we were watching Thomas the Tank Engine on PBS. I realized the narrator's voice sounded really familiar. It was George Carlin. I was like, WTF?! George Carlin narrating a kids train show. It felt really out of context.

So apparently my dad went to a Carlin show around '71 or '72, but he never bothered to tell me this until today.

"One thing I do NOT understand is prostitution. Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?! In the Army, you get a medal for spraying napalm on people. In civilian life, you get arrested for giving someone an orgasm."
