This switch would be great for home or business networking, or as part of a CCNA/CCIE lab setup. 24 10/100 ports, plus two gigabit GBIC slots for uplink/etc.

With integrated POE power injection you can power any compatible device remotely, such as IP phones or wireless APs. There are various howto's online as to modifying routers and such to use POE, and with this switch you won't need to build or buy a power injector!

Cisco part number: WS-C3524-PWR-XL

Asking $120

unfortunately the XL switches run a shitty pseudo-IOS, and the CLI is different than normal IOS switches, so it would probably hurt you more than it would help you.

but, you can't beat the price for a no frills POE switch.

Yep, I tried to price it for about half or so of what they're going for on eBay. I actually have two of them, one I'm most likely going to use for wiring my new place (after some hacking on my WRT54G's to make them take Cisco-spec POE).

Also, I should mention that this automatically senses when PoE compatible equipment is attached and powers that port . . . . otherwise it can be used as a normal managed switch. The 3500 series supports VPN routing and other nifty features that are nice for home networks.

actually the XL switches are all layer 2 only. no VPN or routing is supported.
