I just woke up and found this thing crawling on a wall in my room. Sorry for the crappy cell phone photo...
Also note that it just fell off the wall and I have no idea where the fuck it went.

Creeps me out that I don't know where it went.
I've seen a few of these things around my apartment. Apparently they're breeding an army.

I looked at it quick and thought it was a pic of a hairy butthole.

Kind of centipede-ish, but I have no clue. Good luck trying to rest!

It's a house centipede. It eats other bugs, so it's really not such a bad thing to have in your house.

It's a house centipede. But be careful, they're nasty buggers who CAN sting you.

^Yes they eat other bugs...but the stinging outweighs the good imo.

[Edited on June 24, 2008 at 6:33 AM. Reason : they do tend to mass breed...]

Sweet, mystery solved.

From Wikipedia:
Quote :
"House centipedes feed on spiders, bedbugs, termites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants and other household arthropods. They kill their prey by injecting venom through their fangs."

That makes me feel real good.

Quote :
"Unlike its shorter-legged but much larger tropical cousins, the house centipede or "Swifty" due to their rapid movement, can live its entire life inside a building; usually the ground levels of homes. Because they eat household pests, house centipedes are considered among the most beneficial creatures that inhabit human dwellings. Benefits aside, because of their alarming appearance, frightening speed, and painful bite, few homeowners are willing to share a home with them."

Ahahah..."Swifty". I can see that. And yes, that last sentence is the truth.

Quote :
"Most house centipedes are incapable of penetrating human skin with a bite or a sting. Those that can give an effect no worse than a minor bee sting. The symptoms generally disappear within a few hours. However, the bite can cause health problems for those few who are allergic to the mild venom of its bite, which is similar to that of most normal centipedes."

At least I probably won't get stung...now I just don't want to think about it possibly crawling around on my face while I'm sleeping.

Someone with a nice dSLR and macro lens took this shot and put it on Wikipedia...

You probably couldn't find it because it had already burrowed inside of your brain.

All I can think of are those carnivorous centipedes I've seen on YouTube.

I hate, hate, hate these things. There were tons of them in Wood my freshman year and they would hide in your clothes or whatever and scare the shit out of you.

There are a ton of those things in my basement, I usually leave them alone unless they come upstairs.

Sometimes my dog eats them.

they eat roaches and stuff

so if you have those things, you have enough bugs to sustain the population. better a few predators than a billion prey, imo.

with that being said, i live right beside a creek (its 10 feet from the base of the house, lol) in the woods in a house with lots of cracks around windows and doors. I probably have at least 10 if not 15 spiders in my house right now. typically they stake out a spot and don't move around much so i have a pact with them. if they find a spot to chill and don't make webs everywhere, i don't mess with them.

i did kill one in my bed once though. he had to go for violating the pact, but i didn't take my revenge on his kinsmen.

given the choice between Scutigera and the spiders, i'll take the spiders

yup, thats a house centipede. Back when I lived in Wood Residence Hall, I would see them in the dorm. Freaked my roommate out (but then again, this girl was afraid of crickets) I was glad to learn that they aren't dangerous and eat the other things crawling around the dorm.

That picture from wikipedia is awesome. I like bugs, just when they are not invading my living space.

Kittyb, since you are around, do you know much about native species of spiders in NC? the most prevalent spider I have around in the house is the one in this picture. i know it's kind of blurry, sorry. it doesn't have much of a face, just 2 very large palps.

i'm not an expert on true spiders.

the large palps suggest a mature male in search of a lady
