I see... I was wondering why all the locks showed up on the first page. As for the Euphalo crap, I've just been avoiding TWW after 4PM or so - once they show up it's nothing worth reading, and if it is you have to dig for it.

Believe it or not, the *chan's kind of started cracking down on some of that sort of crap too.

Let me go ahead and tell this out like a little story. You all just copy/paste this when people start asking too many questions about why they purged the EUPHALO crew, effectively declaring that such shit doesn't fly on TWW any more.

4chan had a series on this same problem called "the cancer that is killing /b/".

There's even an article called "the chemo that is curing /b/". Let me see if I can post some excerpts on how the nerdier-than-us guys handled it...

Really /b/ isn't all that different from chit chat, and they're having the same problem with new people spamming the hell out of their place and posting stuff that's completely stupid and also contrary to the original theme of /b/.

This isn't that far from chit chat. Chit chat is where a lot of the funniest drama ever to hit TWW has been posted, including a few notable things like the raiding of that internet forum a little while back that tried to take TWW's userbase, the Sarose bullcrap, news 14, and the I-Need-A-Flick pic scandals. Lately we saw more of a change from the usual drama and stupid college humor and more of that euphalo type humor where they post the same thing over and over again (often in threads that weren't started with a EUPHALO theme in mind or that actually were going somewhere before shit got derailed and people decided to ignore the thread because picking through a turd to find the edible bits wasn't very appealing). See, the humor and such we had before was generated by real events, real drama, and real people being REALLY stupid. That was definitely what made it great to poke around in chit chat after class to see what new bullshit was going on. The new stuff is all crap, and is a bunch of people acting like idiots on the internet. Now what happened over at 4chan's /b/? Well, there's another summary quote I'm stealing from that link I posted here:

So as you can see there, we are not all that different in our suffering an influx of users who, instead of helping contribute to the random shit and retarded college humor of chit chat, started supplanting it with their own form of humor. This humor spread like cancer and, while it was funny for the "inside" crowd, it ended up making it difficult to pick out the good, original content that would show up in chit chat from time to time. Sometimes 2/3 of the page in chit chat would be EUPHALO themed or EUPHALO inspired threads, the content of which was probably between 60-80% similar if not identical in each thread. The problem spread because it wasn't cracked down on immediately as TWW has had a bit of a lack of posts as of late (as you may have noticed!) due to a lack of fresh blood into this site and as a result of a drop in the user population because the board was allowed to fall completely to shit for the longest time (with lots of features not working) before the current group of mods and the new owner (while not without faults) got some stuff repaired and working again (yay search!). It became apparent that EUPHALO was certainly a problem though once it got to where you couldn't discern which threads were "real" chit chat threads and which were EUPHALO spam.

Continuing with the conversation about 4chan and TWW:

So as you can see, they had a problem with a flood of new users causing the problem, whereas we have had a lack of old user retention that caused a similar shift in the new to old user ratio. This allowed chit chat to become taken over rather easily with all this bullshit, and it made it tricky to make the decision to crack down on it as, until the last couple of weeks, it really seemed like something that a majority of TWW users participated in and enjoyed. Recently it became apparent this stuff was being perpetrated by a small group of people, and that they didn't have any intention of stopping regardless of the complaints that their spamming was reducing the quality of the content in chit chat. Often times complaints were met with ridiculous hostility by the most avid EUPHALO supporters, who, in their naivety, thought it was just dem old folks hating on something that was really funny. Unfortunately, they couldn't tell that it really wasn't THAT funny, that it was much akin to beating a dead horse with a danish mines flail, and that it was starting to really breed some resentment from the regular users on the site.

So what could be done to try to stop this? No doubt it will affect this board for some time after this as, inevitably, suspensions wear off, but this was an important first step in controlling the problem. What did /b/ try and do?

Well, let's see what the chemo was that was curing /b/ for a while:

If you look at some of the replies that popped up after these moves, you'll see that a lot of the new users on the site left because they couldn't spam the board as fast any more. Something to consider...

This is also an unfortunate bit of news on 4chan's attempt at controlling their problem:

In short, they waited too long to deal with it and /b/ changed. Does this mean chit chat is doomed to the same fate? Well, the four most responsible for the EUPHALO posts on TWW were suspended tonight in a move to curtail new threads and thread bumps that were clogging up chit chat. If the userbase that was discouraged by the EUPHALO movement were to return and bring their sweet, wonderful posts back with them there is a real chance that chit chat can return to what it once was and that we can organize a "paint the piss out of the tunnel" night to get some more users on this site.

Part 2:

In the end, what will really help TWW keep itself from dying is to allow change, but to prevent stupid spam, and to boost its recruitment of new users. We want to make sure we have new and old users that generate new content and make this place an amusing place to click while at work or after class (or while beating 2 ur pics), but we also want to make sure our mods go through from time to time and pull a fascist brownshirts move and beat the piss out of and suspend anybody that's just acting like an idiot to get attention on this site.

I encourage anybody to treat this as a sort of guide on how to fix TWW, as I'm sure plenty of you have gotten your kicks out of this site and don't want it to die and shit all over itself. God knows I don't want to clean that up.

Err, anyway, here's one last quote I'm stealing from ED that more or less summarizes why this happened and why we've been having a bit of trouble at not being a shitty message board as of late.
