an epic failure on the part of the Chinese?

I think we are about to see 2 world events in the next 2 years that are going to epitomize the FAIL culture - The Communist run Olympics, and then the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

This is what made me think of this:

non-white countries running sporting events = epic fail indeed.

That's great, considering how I'm not white, you dumbshit.

China lacks the infrastructure and the cultural diversity to hold a world event of this magnitude. They had to release a chart showing their people how to cheer, for fuck's sake.

South Africa lacks the infrastructure - it'll just be a question of "Is FIFA going to pull the plug," which I'm sure they will once it becomes apparent that the stadiums needed to suit the influx of people they'll get wont be built in time.

I would like nothing more than to see China embarrassed on the world stage during the Olympics.

For some reason I think South Africa will host a good World Cup though.

too bad you're still wrong, g !

The Chinese government is going to fuck up the Olympics because of their stranglehold over everything, not because they're ethnically Chinese.

omg I sure hope so! Italia '90 FTW. (although sadly Italy did not win then...). Would be awesome if we won two world cups in a row, one being on home turf. At least we know Brazil won't win since they've never won the World Cup on European soil.

and who the fuck cares about the Olympics? World Cup >>>> Olympics.

Well, I did before all these Americans came out of the steroid closet.

But I do care about Olympics soccer.

I heard them say that a guy beat the all time world record for running either the 50 or 100m, but they wouldn't let him hold the record because of wind! What the heck? Would wind really make that big of a difference? I've heard about the swimmers breaking a lot of records due to new suits. One woman broke a world record, and then was beat 20 minutes later!

Seriously, the US doesn't care that much about the World Cup. I know the world does, but we're in America.

The fact that China is having the Olympics is ridiculous. I probably won't watch them either.

the Olympics are a great time for all of the corporate sponsors to look humane, "international" and healthy

like McDonald's and Coca Cola

do you think China will jeopardize their position in the world market over something as trivial as human rights or justice?

I'm sorry, the Olympics are ALREADY ruined... too little too late China

I heard they were taking upwards of 300,000 cars out of Beijing in order to improve air quality.

I put "international" in quotes to emphasize the fact that, while global, these companies and their products are truly nothing more than an enormous bulldozer that levels everyone else's culture and establishes their franchises in its place

the bad for china: The air quality is crap.

the good for china: They can actually make people do shit like stop driving cars.

try that shit in america.

All I give a shit about is judo. And, so long as Iran doesn't try to make trouble like they did in 2004, and everyone plays nice, we should be just fine.
We've got a fantastic team, too. Gotay's got tons of experience, and Rousey's a second-generation badass. Looks like Lambert's staying in junior competition for one more year, though. Maybe 2012, if he doesn't decide to switch to MMA?

I would love for the WC in South Africa to happen. Unfortunately, I think the plug will be pulled by this time next year. The infrastructure fears are bad enough without even considering the stadium construction issues.

Also, LOL at bethaleigh thinking a tailwind won't help you run faster.

Yea, the SA WC won't go smoothly. I met this saffa chick in London who had recently bought a flat a few miles from the stadium, just so she could rent it out. I bet she is biting her nails now.

Even if it isn't in South Africa, it won't be in Italy. The last time one was in Germany and they aren't gonna put it in Europe twice in a row.

But in a pinch, they'll need to put it somewhere where it can be organized quickly and effeciently with minimal purpose-built setup needed. When the SARS scare forced the 2003 Women's World Cup to move, they held it in the US even though the US hosted in 1999.

Oh yes they will. There's only 3 countries in the world that could handle a Men's World Cup event with less than a year's notice - Italy, England, and Spain.

^^ or the USA?

With the number of large stadiums and lodging, entertainment, and restaurants in place, I bet America could be a potential replacement host.

That way, it would still be played, and it would also keep it off the European continent.

the US doesn't have enough soccer-specific stadia that could handle 50k+ fans.

There's no requirement for them to be soccer-specific. As far as emergency replacement venues go, the US is always on the list because there are any number of venues with satisfactory seating and infrastructure.

I just wouldn't think that without extremely high gusty winds, that you'd be able to pick up enough extra speed to not take the world record when you beat it.

yea. even a normal soccer game in Europe will have 75k+. World Cup would easily break 100k.

You're out of your element, chembob.

The largest venue used in the 2006 WC seats 75,000. Six of the twelve stadiums used in 2006 seat less than 50,000.

No one gives a shit about watching Romania vs. Iraq. You only need a couple of very large stadiums to host a WC, and the US has a number that seat over 90,000.
