it's a dorm
it's closer to hillsborough than all the other dorms
and it's a little more spacious per room than the proper dorms
but it's still a dorm 7/5/2008 12:50:21 PM |

It used to be a hotel. Each room has it's own bathroom, so even though it is a hall style, you only have to share a bathroom with your roommate. It's good if you have a lot of classes in North Campus especially, but it is kind of detached from the other dorms since it is across Hillsborough. 7/5/2008 1:33:46 PM |

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be racist or anything.. It seriously does. Also, correct that it used to be a hotel. 7/5/2008 1:37:02 PM |

Yea, if you're black and living on campus, you're pretty much assigned to North Hall or Avent Ferry.
Then again, I wouldn't expect different from a state that still assigns school districts based on where the different races live. 7/5/2008 1:50:47 PM |

I used to cheat on my ex-gf who lived in North Hall with a girl that lived on the floor below her, that was a great few months. 7/5/2008 2:10:39 PM |

used to live behind there. it was definitely a good place to find some shenanigans in the parking lot or in the vacinity. like the halfway house across the street and up a ways. im pretty sure there was an article in the technician a couple years ago about some chick that got raped in one of the bathrooms too. pretty weird article for a school newspaper, and i didnt enjoy it, but there you go. have at it. 7/5/2008 9:44:31 PM |

I use to tutor at the WSTS that was in North Hall. It definitely had a predominantly black population there, but I really liked the environment. Everyone seemed really nice and together. 7/5/2008 9:46:31 PM |

Wasn't black...lived there...not bad...I got fat though b/c I would walk to Bruegger's, NY Pizza, Golden Dragon all the time...especially a nice place to be when there is a snowstorm b/c everything is usually still open there. Hope you like it.
My roommate was black. He smoked a lot of black 'n milds. But he kept it out of the dorm for the most part.

Well supposedly city/government officials used to rent out the Merry Monk hall/room on the top floor for meetings an 'get togethers'7/6/2008 10:32:35 PM |

My good friend lived there for 3 semesters. Its a pretty sweet location even though it is somewhat out of the way. The rooms are big enough to fit a beer pong table and quite a few people. My friend hardly saw his RA and was left alone to do pretty much whatever. If you already have/can make some friends, your room will definitely be the place to throw down. 7/7/2008 8:38:39 AM |

i lived there my sophmore year. i had a great time. if you're really into campus life you may feel a little detached, but i loved it. the rooms are huge (comparitively) and we used to rage out late night and never got called out. i even liked the location even though most of my classes were on central campus. 7/7/2008 1:03:56 PM |

Quote : | " North Residence Hall, located on Hillsborough Street, was originally the Lemon Tree Inn, a privately-owned hotel. Later it became the John Yancey Hotel, offering a restaurant and "Merry Monk" nightclub to visitors. The hotel was a favorite establishment among legislators and other politicians during the 70's. When enrollment increased at NC State in the 1980's, the University bought the hotel to serve as a residence hall.
Yancey donated all of the furniture and North Hall became the first dormitory on campus to have air-conditioning and other amenities. A strict conduct policy was designed to make sure that the new residents, who called the building "merry monk dorm," kept it in good condition. The adoption of North Hall became the first time that NC State had independently purchased off-campus property for student housing. " |
