Too much, I'm sure since it's "art" they paid $texas to have some fruit boot "artist" to design it. This is Time + Light (the tower out on Capital just north of downtown) on a larger scale.

I think it's a neat idea and can't wait to see it.

^it could be worse. I visited a town in Korea that had a LED rainbow bridge

V that's fucking awesome, but people are still going to bitch about it either way

This is in a different league than time+light. First of all, it actually looks good.

I'll reserve final judgment until I've seen it in person, but I think this is a variant of the "good" kind of public art.

If they ever stop ruining downtown with construction, I think this will probably be worth it.

that's pretty hot.....don't get why everyone's bitching about being expensive when I'm pretty sure no one here knows how much it cost. Besides, it's improving our downtown area; I'm all for it

It was >$1 million, and even if it was privately donated, it's still a waste of money. Why doesn't anyone have the good sense to pull these companies aside and say, "Look, we don't need any shitty pixelated artwork. What we need are bike trails. $1 million would pave a lot of bike trails."

you engineers have NO FUN.

You also go to a school that is completely covered in brick.

I'm not one of those bleeding heart liberals to say "ooooh...preeeeeeeeeeeeettyyyyy colors...." but at the same time, if you travel around to the greatest cities in the world, they've all spent $TEXAS on some crazy ass design work. When I was in belgium they had a huge brass sculpture that stood several stories tall- INSIDE the airport. It had no function, it was just cool to look at. The Duomo in Firenze? No function- in fact- they built that thing for god ....you don't hear the romans saying "god?? what a waste of cash".

Public art makes our city more attractive- and to relate that back to you, our valued personality-free engineering students, that's good for the economy. And I don't know if you've noticed lately, but our economy is really taking a beating.

Everything has its purpose. You must appreciate the effort our city is putting in to our downtown area to boost our own standard of living.

$1 million dollars is a drop in the bucket to add a little much needed culture and flair to the city.

I'm sure there's more to it than that, something along the lines of Raleigh awards contracts to Cree in return Cree "donates" one million to build the shimmer wall. I know it can't be that simple but you get the idea. It's funny how this happened not too long after the FSM "art" project got pwnd when people found out it would cost a couple of million to pay the same flake that made the Chicago spitting wall.

it looks cool but i dont know how effective it will actually be. if it was smaller and used for a courtyard entrance where all the effects are seen a little better, I think that would be best

Damn someone should have suggested that Cree give up on manufacturing LEDs and power components and take up paving for bike trails
