Except for being gov't sponsored; sounds like shit that would happen if I walked near Doak Field at 3AM or lived in the "bad" part of Durham. Africa was one of many places where european countries had colonies. However, I have never heard of shit like this going down in other places. 7/15/2008 6:57:22 PM |

A group of Zimbabwe bandits called "war veterans", backed by the government, seizes a white man's farm plantation after the government said it planned on taking it and "redistribute" to the common folk. Farmer and family try to flee, but get beaten, their plantation damaged and everything looted. A Zimbabwe Senator blames the West for their poor situation, despite the fact that his own "redistribute" policy/amendment from 2000 is killing the country. 77 Other white farmers are trying to fight the government in the courts and fear for their property and lives.

This is extremely fucked up.
A little more stuff like this in the news and we'll end up intervening in the matter and making it worse (by giving that bunch of assholes some real reasons to hate on us). 7/15/2008 8:32:34 PM |

Some more news on Zimbabwe.
Quote : | "Zimbabwe inflation at 2,200,000%
Zimbabwe's annual rate of inflation has surged to 2,200,000%, official figures have shown.
The figure is the first official assessment of prices in the troubled African nation since February, when the rate of inflation stood at 165,000%.
Zimbabwe, once one of the richest countries in Africa, has descended into economic chaos largely blamed on the policies of President Robert Mugabe.
Mr Mugabe was re-elected last month in a controversial one-man race.
The opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), pulled out of the run-off election, saying its supporters were being attacked and killed.
"This situation is not sustainable. There's going to be some sort of implosion" - Rejoice Ngwenya, economist
Zimbabwe 'getting worse'
Rising costs are forcing retailers to increase prices a number of times a day for goods purchased with billion dollar bank notes and the number of people falling into poverty is on the rise.
In May, the central bank issued a 500m Zimbabwe dollar banknote, worth US$2 at the time of issue, to try to ease cash shortages amid the world's highest rate of inflation.
This is in stark contrast with the situation at independence in 1980 when one Zimbabwe dollar was worth more than US$1.
Mr Mugabe denies that he is ruining the economy, laying the blame on international sanctions he says have been imposed against Zimbabwe.
The US and the EU have imposed targeted sanctions, such as a travel ban and an assets freeze, on Mr Mugabe and his close allies. " |
Can you fucking imagine if you went to a store the next day and stuff cost fifty times as much as it did the day before? (Estimated by taking 2.2 million%, dividing that by 365...) I have a feeling something absolutely ridiculous is going to take place in Zimbabwe before the end of the year. I don't see how there hasn't been an uprising yet.7/16/2008 2:17:17 PM |
