hey guys. would anyone be interested in setting up an auto-x in raleigh once school starts up? I'm thinking we could start a student organization and get the school to pay for the entry fees and insurance.

I think it's highly unlikely that this will happen. Tarheel Sports Car Club can't get sites around Raleigh and they bring their own insurance + decades of being one of the safest organizations in the nation. You also have to consider the cost of all those cones and timing equipment.

Your best bet would be to start the club and participate in events hosted by Tarheel Sports Car Club or Triad Sports Car Club. It would take a little driving, but that's just what you have to do. All the fun, but 1% of the work.

sorry, i should probably introduce myself first. Hi everyone,my name is Igor and I'm a newb . I started this club (http://www.umassmotorsport.co.nr) about 2 years ago, and i just moved to here to NCSU for school. The SCCA tried to secure a site on our campus but was turned down originally. We tried to set up our own autocross secured the site that the SCCA couldn't get because we're affiliated with the school. The pitfall was that the school lawyers/insurance people considered the campus too dense to host such an event and had to cancel it. I believe there is precedent for an autocross here at NCSU, as the THSCC lists the RBC center as one of its sites. In regards to money, our club got $11k in funding for this upcoming year with just a bit of effort. Personally, I'd love to get up at 10 or 11 am on a weekend after a fun night out and drive 5 minutes to a free autox. I'm just trying to see who would come if I set this up, because the more people you have interested the higher the chance of actually getting something done. So who's down to see this happen?

I think creating the club is feasible. I just don't think NCSU is going to put up much money or provide a parking lot. I know it's hard to believe, but NCSU actually hates it's students.

oh you think UMASS likes their students? or gives our parking lots or money? hell no. Its all about politics and playing your cards right. Get the staff interested and you'll get a parking lot and a student-run garage all the other student groups don't get any money from the SGA, but somehow we got 11k Anything is possible if you know what youre doing.

ok, first off, thscc has not used RBC center in at least 4-5 years unless i missed something. closest site they usually use is sanford (~30-45 minutes)

second, their autoxs start at like 8-9am.. not 10 or 11.

i would be down, but i am no longer a student (Alum). dont know if that matters. you would still need cones and timing equipment, as well as some way to store it when there is not an event. plus tables, fire extinguishers, insurance, some way to run/record the timing equipment, etc, etc, etc. it adds up quick.

i have heard of thscc doing all the setup and support (equipment, etc) for a viper club event for a fee (i have no clue what it is, tho). that may be a possibility but i dont see ncsu being all to interested.

the timing equipment and cones are really details. The biggest obstacle that I see is whether there's enough support from the people in administration. Usually the responses that I got were very polar, such as "this sounds awesome lets do this i'm totally coming to your first event", from the people that love cars. I also got the "cars going fast - this seems really dangerous" from non-car people.

you've got to have a damn good plan of action to approach NCSU with this.

when i was first year at NCSU, i attempted to look into something like this with some folks from that formula team.

what i heard was that NCSU doesnt want to support anything. plus there is a lot of liability issues.

i mean, you can try now, but i doubt they want to use their money towards a buncha reckless driving (thats what they would call it)

its not gonna be easy, but its doable. Example: (http://www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2005/11/10/Aggielife/Texas.Am.Sports.Car.Club.Feels.The.Need.For.Speed.In.Its.Hobby-1052285.shtml" target="_blank">http://media.http://www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2005/11/10/Aggielife/Texas.Am.Sports.Car.Club.Feels.The.Need.For.Speed.In.Its.Hobby-1052285.shtml)

It's all how you approach it. You can sell it as a "driver education event", or "driving school" to the critics. Basically, all I'm doing this summer is putting together a good plan and making friends in all the right places in order to make this happen. When we wanted money for the umass club, we didnt ask how much they could give us, we asked how much they have, and then we found ways to take it.

that park and ride in front of the state trooper station is. that;s where they test the ASME formula car. the poles down there are fuckin up the program a bit, also there's a ton of loose stone on top.

i hear baonest is involved in some sort of a redneck unnafiliate underground rallycross association that straps 150,000 lights and a showel on top of poor unsuspecting civics and then proceeds to beat the living hell outta them while filming it all on a Betamax cam duct taped to his roof. No insurance issues there

autoX in west lot, or a road coarse between the gravel parking next to UT and the parking decks, through Dan Allen deck, then a race down Dan Allen and jump the speed bump in front of Witherspoon.

They're testing the formula car these days in the Fire Department parking lot near Beryl Road ($1.50 cinema)

I was out there a few months ago when they were running some hotlaps.

That parking lot is no where near big enough for a real car. It pretty much isn't big enough for their car. If I recall, I think someone slammed it into one of the islands out there a few years ago.

igorien2k I would love to try to help you get this accomplished. I have wanted to start auto crossing for awhile but driving 2 hours to get a good one. In order to get this done, you probably need to approach it more as a driving learning experience, maybe if we can get enough money, we could hire some instructors to ride along in order to make the learning part true. Also if we tell them we will police the mufflers and have noise restrictions, that should help too. My email is jrpsaros@ncsu.edu. Let me know if you interested in any help

lol..lets race in a parking lot can call it a driving experience..

anything involving competing with timed trials isnt going to fly as a driving experience.

unless everytime you have one you call it a autoX school and dont "compete" against the clock

Is anybody up for a beltline race tonight? Two laps; $3500 buy in. Winner take all. Meet at the Exxon on Gorman Street at 2:00 a.m if you're in. It'll be a driving experience.

I figured I'd post it since we're already talking about things that will never happen.

ive already worked that into the group description, high performance driving school instruction will be offered, which also gets you a discount on your insurance premium btw in case you didnt know. Also the FSAE team needs a place to test their car, and I'm not sure if currently they have insurance to do that on campus. Its coming together but slowly.

wait, so you're gonna call your autoX's a driving experience?

then you cant compete. and i dont see a very good reason to come out more than like 2-3 times if i cant see improvement under pressure. i'm all for more driving experience, but people dont want to goto school all the time. they wanna drive fast and beat faster cars

im kinda lost here igor. help a brotha out.

^^ high performance driving school instruction will be offered

there will be schools and regular autox. They both require the same insurance policy. As long as we have one successful event, even if its just a driving school, and we can show that its safe, they'll let us do autox.

*EDIT* Clubs dont have to do useful stuff all the time. sometimes you just have to do things for fun.

forum and website are ready. should hopefully be up tomorrow as soon as the ncsu webmaster gets back to me. student legal looked over the proposal for autox on campus, pointed out the holes, told me EXACTLY what needed to be done, and even offered to talk to the right people in administration about it. => really great department!!! pretty good chance this might actually become a reality this time. I'll post up a link as soon as the forum is up, so if you're interested, SIGN UP!!

logistics come later. first they want to know which lot we want to use. it needs to meet the following requirements.

A. The event is held on a flat surface.

B. RESTRICTED AREAS: Must include, at a minimum, the course surface, the area within the circumference of the course, and all other areas within 100 feet of the outside of the course, and the PIT AREA.

C. VIEWING AREAS: Must be designated explicitly. Must be located beyond the 100 foot RESTRICTED AREA. The boundary between the Viewing Area and the RESTRICTED AREA will be established with at least rope and banner; a fence of some kind is strongly recommended. SPECTATORS are restricted to the Viewing Areas.

D. PERMANENT, REAL, FIXED PROPERTY (buildings, trees, light stanchions, similar physical obstructions): May not be closer than 25 feet to the course in STRAIGHTS and/or inside of TURNS, not closer than 75 feet on the outside of the TURNS.

most importantly, it has to be mostly empty on weekends. Please dont suggest the RBC center.

The best way to do this would be to try and start autocross as a club sport @ NCSU.
We started up the NCSU Freeride mountain bike team and they had to let us ride on campus cause there was no other venue we could use to "practice"

So...try to start up a team and then once its started ask them for a venue to practice & suggest parking lots that would be good.

I'm not saying it would work again but it was fun showing cops signed sealed documents that said we could infact jump off this set of stairs... (only worked for 1 year though then they closed the club)
