"Josh Hamilton is a former number one overall pick of the Devil Rays in 1999.

By 2002 Hamilton had failed two drug tests and was suspended 25 games for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. It is probably then that he began his drug tirade. He was dismissed from the teams training camp in 2003 to get his life in order, but he never returned.

The rest of the story goes like this: he did lots of drugs, went to rehab, did lots of drugs, went to rehab, went to rehab, did lots of drugs, went to rehab, did lots of drugs, went to rehab, went to rehab, and came back to baseball.

What exactly about this story is supposed to make me feel good? Is it because he gave up drugs to come back to baseball? This story does not make me feel good at all, in fact it makes me feel terrible.

There are a ton of people who end up turning to drugs in this world for all different kinds of reasons. Most of those that abuse it to the extent that Josh Hamilton did, have been rendered useless to society and are just thrown away from the public eye, unless of course you happen to live anywhere that see the growing homeless epidemic we have in this country. This story embodies the cruelness of the American "what can you do for me" attitude. There are plenty of people who struggled with drug addiction that end up living on the street, because unlike Josh Hamilton, they did not have a billion dollar industry to run to when they decided to kick the habit.

The story of Josh Hamilton doesn't make me feel good in the least. This kid probably realized that after abusing drugs for four years he was kinda low on cash and would really like to just play baseball the rest of his life than to get a real job to support his habit.

Though, I do applaud him for giving up drugs.

I'm not exactly sure how free agency works with MLB service time

but he considering he only has about 1 year total

I don't think he can get a big contract for several more years

till he's at least 30

he didn't "run" back to baseball, he begged and pleaded for yet another chance and was luckily granted it

I'm not mad at him for having an opportunity

granted, most anyone here would be just SOL if they did what he did, but then again, if you had a talent that you were extremely good at, then you can still make money if you can recover from being an idiot

I think most people that are hating are hating because they are expendable, which JH is also in the grand scheme of things, but his talent was enough of a reason to give him another shot and as a friend of his and his family for almost my whole life, I am glad he got another shot at it and I hope he doesn't fuck it up

When you're having the kind of season he's having, you can threaten to sit out if your team doesn't give you a better contract and when you provide the production he's providing it would be in the team's best interests to re-do a deal for more money or else lose his bat. There's about a 97% chance he'll be making a substantial amount more next season.

He has no leverage

They own his rights

He's their property

Even if wins the triple crown

One of the conditions of his reinstatement to MLB is that he is tested for drugs 3 times a week.

people dont sit out of baseball 2 years, after only playing single A for the equivalent of season and come back straight into the majors and start kicking ass. thats the crazy thing.

1) Service time clock starts upon major league debut.
2) Service time: 0 - 3.000 years you can be paid league minimum.
3) Service time: 3.000 - 6.000 years you are eligible for salary arbitration where the team offers a salary and you offer a salary and an arbiter decides who "wins" based on historical figures and current market values.
4) Service time 6.000 years and on you are eligible for full free agency.

Of course a lot of smaller market teams offer long term contracts after the league minimum years because typically a players value is lesser and it allows them to sign them through 1 or 2 years of free agency where otherwise they'd move on go play for the Mets, Yankees, Sox, Dodgers, Angels or Cubs.

A lot of larger market teams offer long term contracts to players even 1 or 2 years in to the league minimum (think Jose Reyes and David Wright) and buy out 5-6 years forward at above market value for someone with their service time. A lot of times this is done because the teams can afford it and they want to build player-organization loyalty.

Clear it up?
