OP forgot the caveats: "who do NOT have nuclear weapons, fucktons of oil, and big friends"

I think Bush is afraid that Iran already has nuclear weapons. Maybe he knows it, but the information's classified. *shrug* Given his persistence with North Korea and their possession of nukes being a key difference between them and Iran, I'd say the theory's at least plausible.

These days, I'm of the "You mean he hasn't invaded them, yet?" persuasion. But then, Iran has diplomatic leverage.

They're using their oil supply in combination with their central bank to make our dollar less attractive to foreign governments and investors. The international market's hedging away from the dollar as a reserve currency has everything to do with Iran's recent abandonment of the OPEC-standard $USD pricing. I'd suggest our diplomatic obsession with this nation (and it's highly-marketed prescience) may be related to this economic politicking.

Add strategic arms (or "raw materials for arms") trading partners--and human rights divas--Russia and China and you've got enough of an entourage to explain the Shah throwing gang signs at the US from the world stage with nary a peep from King George.

how is this a negotiation? and that policy is meant for immediate negotiations in response to kidnappings, hijacking, etc.

oh, give me a break, wdprice3... I mean, dubya's already flopped by restoring diplomatic relations w/ N. Korea based on nothing more than "they told us what they allegedly have." I'm not trying to parrot John Stewart here, but I thought these guys were 2/3rds of "The Axis of Evil.(tm)" But now it's all good. Guess they must not have been too bad after all...
