a guy buys an $80,000 escalade when gas is $2.80

a year later he wants to trade it in at a $40,000 loss when gas is $4.00 a gallon, because gas is too expensive for a big SUV

but even at more than a 25% increase

at 30 gallons a week

that's only ~$1,500 more per year in cost

and you wanna take a $40,000 hit on trading in for a civic

people are so fucking dumb

record profits are partly the result of not investing more money back into the system and mostly b/c of third world countries going on an industrial revolution.

people are using/buying more. they are selling any oil they pump out of the ground overseas.

that's where the money is coming from. china, india, etc... those countries are cash rich and willing to pay almost anything to get what they need.

when that stops, things will normalize and asking over $100/barrel will seem insane.

why build more refining capacity here, if all the oil they pump out of the ground is wanted overseas? it makes good business sense to send it over there, let them process it due to their lax environmental regs. and reap even more profits b/c it's cheaper to refine.

also, drilling in protected areas and off shore seems all well and good, BUT there isn't a guarantee that the oil they remove will even be kept for use in country. no one seems to mention that. when are they going to increase refining capacity? never. it's more profitable not to.

i love how a few people get the entire US in a tizzy and the wave of stupidity washes over everything and everyone agrees to something they haven't even thought through.

"Sex, blood and baby names: U.S. mad for free gas

By Matthew Robinson and Rebekah Kebede

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some U.S. motorists sick of getting clobbered at the pump seem willing to do just about anything for free fuel, from giving up the right to name their children to stealing from day-care centers to donating blood.

In Orlando, Florida, David Partin pledged to name his son after local radio hosts to win a $100 gas card as part of a contest. Partin will collect the card in December, when his son is born, if he can produce a birth certificate proving the baby is named Dixon Willoughby Partin, after the hosts.

"(His wife said) this is his problem to explain when the child is older," Greg Stevens, WHTQ-FM program director told Reuters.

At the Shady Lady Ranch brothel in Beatty, Nevada, clients who spend $300 or more this month will receive $50 gas vouchers as part of a promotion to beat the summer slump in business.

"It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months," said James Davis, who co-owns the ranch with his wife, Bobbi.

The first $1,000 in gas cards were given out within a week, he added.

In Mesquite, Texas, thieves drained $100 worth of gasoline from buses used by the Higher Ground Church day-care center and have hit four or five other church center fleets in the area.

"It was someone who was desperate," said James Green, the church's pastor. "All he had to do was come and ask us and we would have bought him a tank of gas."

The American Red Cross, meanwhile, is running a summer raffle where blood donors are eligible to win a year's supply of fuel.

At St. Ann's Parish in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the Rev. Edward McDonagh has decided to institute a drawing for a $50 gasoline card at weekly mass.

The drawings are symbolic gestures and not intended to boost attendance, he said.

"When Jesus was at the wedding feast of Cana, the groom ran out of wine, he produced the wine for them," he said. "In that spirit, we feel that this might be comparable."

domestic drilling has to do with supply and future supply and prospecting which affects prices

what are we supposed to do? tax the oil companies more so they can raise prices even more? or do we try to find more oil, while at the same time get the private sector to come up with vehicles that run on alternative fuel sources

1) While profits may be at a 'record', the profits/revenue is about at 10%. Lower than CBS was last quarter. So when you hear these huge numbers, dont be fooled. They have an insane number of sales. Thats why it sounds so ridiculous.

2) There are huge barriers to entry in the oil business. Thats why Joe down the street isnt opening an oil company to drive down the prices. They, just like any other business, are in an oligopoly and are out to make money. You dont hear people screaming when Callaway charges 800 dollars for a set of golf clubs or when you order a pizza for 15 bucks. Everyone is out to make money. Its the real world, welcome.

3) The US doesnt have that big of an effect. China has over a billion people. India has over a billion people. Theyre both going through industrial revolutions of sort. They suck up a lot of gas.

4) Our taxes are at about 40 cents per gallon. Not that much compared to other places where the pigouvian taxes on gas are much higher. The majority of economists want an increased gas tax. It would be the most direct and immediate way to move forward. We would want more fuel efficient cars. There would be more incentive for car companies to produce them. We would devote more resources towards the most efficient means for energy. NOT ethanol or whatever else the government wants. Which is more polluting than gas, can barely survive with huge subsidies and has drive the price of food up.

So, in short, stop complaining and wake up

Also, the futures price of oil has dropped a relatively considerable amount in the last couple days

Yeah, like encourage big tax subsidies for alternative fuel efforts (excluding efforts that convert food into fuel), ensure that regulatory commissions are actively investigating and auditing larger energy companies to ensure there is no evidence of collusion, and keeping tabs on the oil markets to ensure that speculators aren't working to drive up the price of oil in order to increase their own profits.

I'm pretty sure they're doing almost all of that, and even the a-rabs are saying that oil prices are unusually high on the markets where speculating is/can occur.

*shrug* I'm pretty sure you're trolling anyway, this is chit chat.
