I really liked the smaller beach communities outside of Rio...
I've never been to Chile but I'd like to...
Why Brazil? It's awesome.. the locals are really cool and outgoing, the beaches are amazing (hottest women on earth) and there is TONS of stuff to do...

Macchu Picchu is one of the only things I've ever seen that exceeded all expectations.
It is huge. It is beautiful, it is interesting, and it is just all-around mind-blowing.
I spent some time in Peru and it's got a lot going for it. There's variety of landscape, a favorable exchange rate, and a relatively low chance of getting kidnapped or murdered. Cuzco is a very nice town that is surprisingly not very tourist-oriented (no fast food there, as opposed to in Lima).
Speaking of Lima, though, it may well be the anus of the Western Hemisphere. It is perpetually gray. The city is unattractive, and it is crawling with beggars and prostitutes. The only really neat place I found there was Larcomar, which is definitely the neatest shopping center I've ever seen -- but that ain't enough to make the city worth visiting.
But, if you just use Lima as a place to change planes for Cuzco, or maybe Trujillo if you prefer straight-up jungle, there's a lot of fun to be had there. 7/20/2008 1:27:17 PM |

I'd definitely get over to Peru if you could - Machu Picchu was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It's even better if you can hike the Inca trail up to it.

While Lima isn't my favorite place, I thought the fog was only there in the winter (our summer). The summer months down there are supposedly beautiful.7/20/2008 1:31:44 PM |

This is true.

This is not.
The more the sun's out, the more easy it is to see how dilapidated and run-down the city is.7/20/2008 1:34:04 PM |

I see - I was only down there during the winter, so I experienced the fog AND dilapidation

You really should see Patagonia. It is where I want to go more than any place on the planet. The landscape is unbelievable.

But really, wherever you decide to go I don't think you will be disappointed.

Generally not very much. It's a little more than three Soles to the dollar, and even by that standard shit is cheap. You can get a pretty solid meal most places for 10-15 soles (3-5 dollars), drinks are usually pretty cheap, and transportation is incredibly so. You can get all over town by taxi or microbus for a few bucks.
There are those places that will try to screw you if you're a tourist. Speaking Spanish to them normally gives you some credibility that makes them come down a little, and in a lot of places (especially outside of Lima), you can haggle.
Within Lima itself, the "black markets" (which are just big malls selling shit that's technically illegal, but when the police aren't shopping there they're guarding the place, and it even has ATMs) are good to get cheap shit to bring back home, especially DVD's. I bought Star Wars III and Batman Begins in English the day after each came out, high quality and pretty much indistinguishable from legit DVD's except for poor translation on the box cover. Each one cost about $2.50 after a quick haggle.7/22/2008 10:21:34 PM |

If I could speak Spanish I would go to Argentina, so I could see the Super Classico (Boca Juniors vs River Plate). For some reason that along with the FIFA World Cup, and Celtic vs Rangers is on my to do before I die list. 7/22/2008 10:31:18 PM |
