So I love stand-up comedy. Probably the biggest thing I miss about Raleigh is being able to consistently see good acts at Charlie Goodnights. So this thread should be dedicated to favorite stand-up comedians, new ones you just discovered, ones that are touring in the area, stories about particular acts you've seen, etc.

Popular Favorites:

Dave Chappelle (saw him at Charlie Goodnights in '04 or '05...guy before him was actually a little better...but Killing me Softly is pretty classic)
Dave Attel (Skanks for the Memories is probably my favorite stand-up)
Mitch Hedberg (most unique delivery...saw him downtown Raleigh before he died...sad stuff)

Others:

Mike Birbiglia (two drink mike)
Daniel Tosh (trust stories i made up)
Mitch Fatel (funny as shit, but delivery starts to get annoying)
Robert Kelly (just the tip)
Rich Voss (on the list not necessarily because I think he's that funny, but because I saw him at Charlie Goodnights and he had no prepared act, but just did an hour of making fun of people in the audience...fucking hilarious...I got made fun of a little bit, but paled in comparison to other audience members...one of who was a guy who picked up a chair and threatened to get on stage and beat him up with it...classic)

David Cross is a snarky, elitist asshole

and he is undoubtedly my favorite comedian. he talks about feeling out of place when he grew up as a jew in the south. i kinda related to that growing up in a rural southern small town. (tho im not jewish)

Ralphie May is pretty funny, find him on youtube, but I find that he is kind of a one dimensional stand up who's jokes are almost all racial.

the most underrated comedians cuz their names are hard to spell or they arent on anything that popular except Comedy Central Presents:

Zach Galifianakis (the guy who fell asleep in the car in Out Cold, from NC apparently)
Brian Posehn (the sterotypical big creepy guy in everything)
Jon Reep (Hemi guy, From Hickory NC)

more well known and IMO on the same level as Chapelle:

Kat Williams

I have more but I only remember their routine not their name

Greg Warren
The Amazing Johnathan

Chris Rock's "Bring the Pain" and "Bigger & Blacker" are classics

^Forgot about Stephen Lynch. Pretty sure he opened up for Mitch when Mitch was in Raleigh. Hilarious.

I liked Ron White once...the first time I heard his stand up. Then I realized he didn't come up with anything new. Saw him in Raleigh too...and it was the exact same thing he's been doing for the past 10 years. Kind of disappointed.

It doesn't bother the Blue Comedy Collar fan group...they short term memories.

Those guys must have made a deal with the devil (White is the best of all of them though...I think he saw his gravy train and hopped on).

i just saw kyle cease recently and thought his special was great. he's great at running a joke so far past where it's unfunny that it's back to being hillarious. good for tosh fans

while we're on the topic. here's my quick list of comedians that i honestly do not understand how people think they're funny. so if you like them, please come forward. they're so bad to me that i won't even hate, i just don't understand.

bill engvall

For me, this discussion begins and ends with the Comedians of Comedy

- Patton Oswalt
- Brian Posehn
- Zach Galifanakis

And while we're here, Richard Pryor is the best ever.

[FAIL]
Seinfeld is one of best stand-ups of all time, and not a single one of you named him.

I've seen in person (order of goodness)
Seinfeld (2x)
Lewis Black
Bill Cosby
Nick Swardson
Zach G
George Carlin (hated)

The first time I saw him in Greenville SC, Seinfeld was amazing. The most recent trip to Raleigh was fair. But I have to give him credit for the first show.

Saw Lewis Black in D-Town.

Stand-kind of sucks today. Improv is where it's at (longform at that)

Pryor will forever be #1. Zach G. and Regan are baller as well.

i saw chris rock at chalie good nights

his political jokes (90% of his act) didn't go over so hot in that crowd. i dont really know what those people were expecting when they paid money to see a chris rock show.

^^^^ Bill Burr might be the funniest act I've ever seen. Too bad he was surrounded by Charlie Murphy and that guy Donnell (or however you spell his name) from Chappelle Show.

Really funny, but a guy got sick in the middle of his set, and it was this whole big thing. He turned out to be alright and the group left... after that he came back on and we ended up getting a pretty original show as he made light of that situation. I already thought he was pretty hillarious before, and now I think even more of him that he was able to just come up with the shit he did.

yeah, i was at the first show. that was really bizarre, especially when the sick guy went from 'having a stroke' to walking out perfectly fine.
