Need some help figuring out what a table that I bought is made of. I think it's rosewood, but I'm really not good at this at all.
Any help?

need a pic of the end grain
anyone who tries to tell you what that is by those pics has no idea what the hell they are talkin about, i do know a professor in forestry that taught part of our wood chemistry class back in the day that can look at a splinter and tell what species and what region of what country it grew in
no doubt its a slow growing, dense, hardwood due to what can be seen, but without being able to see the trachieds in the end grain, or the cellular structure, hard to identify
if i had to throw out a guess, due to the lighter streaks in the latewood grain, i would say red oak
here is the same wood stained differently, as you can see, without looking at the unfinished bottom, or the end grain, its hard to tell

^ it is definitely not walnut, pecan, or any fruit bearing trees because of the huge earlywood/latewood grain ratio 7/21/2008 10:26:03 PM |

did you take a class where you had to identify 30 something species of wood by microscope pictures too? 7/21/2008 10:29:38 PM |
slaptit All American 2991 Posts user info edit post |
you should also realize that there are only a few species of wood that are commonly used to make table tops, especially ones that like the pics
but the interlocked grain pattern is throwing me off.....what about padouk??

it's probably not maple, pine, poplar, or walnut.
more likely would be oak or ash, though they don't usually have the color variation
